It seems like this pick is to deflect attention away from Obama's speech last night and give everyone on TV and the interwebs something else to talk about, mission accomplished.

However, there is a full month until November, and I think this pick is really going to come back and bite McCain in the ass. If the McCain strategy is to make people vote for him because everyone is a meany face to your attractive vice presidential candidate, and it works, then god help us all.

He seems to be going after 2 things with this pick:

Energy (drilling in Anwar?)
Working class women/security moms

They will try to sell her as his "mavericky" side kick, but she is even more conservative than McCain. Oh, and you'll be hearing about that "bridge to nowhere" every day from now until Nov.

The timing was definitely aimed at deflating the Obama speech bump, but as I mentioned in McCain's thread, the VP pick is mostly about image for the campaign (hello Mr. Experience Joe Biden), and this one does a lot for the McCain campaign:

-out-of-nowhere woman outsider pick gets the "wow" media factor and lots of pub;
-attractive woman (former Miss Alaska runner-up) helps offset really-old white guy McCain image, and of course appeals to Hillary/feminist voters;
-Washington outsider with executive experience (and very high approval ratings) and ethics background;
-NRA member, hunting and fishing enthusiast;
-Eskimo husband (high-school sweetheart and snowmobile champ) will be a media darling, son will be going to Iraq this month;
-fiscal conservative and pro-life good for the right;
-reasonable positions on the gay marriage issue that probably won't offend either side;
-Alaska background brings a personal touch to the drilling discussion...

There are a lot of conservative concerns and interest groups (and fence-sitters, especially those previously inclined toward Hillary) who will find something to like about this pick.

I think there's more to it than that as outlined in previous posts; i.e. ANWAR state gov., DC outsider, etc.
