Political Conversation and Debate This forum is not a temporary one. It will exist up to, and after the presidential elections. Some people want to talk or even argue politics, other's don't. Let's see if we can apply some reason and understanding to the debate.

Big loss for ACORN and the bailout provision that would have directed funds their way if the Dems got their way.

This begs the question: Isn't part of the reason we (Fannie/Freddie, etc) are in this financial mess because we tried to give "affordable housing" to people that couldn't afford it? Ironic indeed.

ACORN outrage removes affordable housing provision

The ACORN issue is off the table.

After several days of rage from conservative activists regarding a provision in the bailout bill that would send some of the profits from the sale of distressed assets the goverment buys into an affordable housing trust fund, congressional negotiators have removed section 105(d) of the bailout proposal, according to aides on both side.

ACORN, a Democratic ally, was not specifically directed any funds in the previous proposal, but money that went to state and local governments could then have been divvied out to the organization, which the GOP said was a deal breaker. Fevered opposition to the provision had become a viral sensation.

Your own article notes that no funds would be specifically directed to an ACORN sponsored organization. Ironic indeed.

I guess that the GOP House Reps get their chest thumping talking point. ACORN, by the way, is not just one organization, but an umbrella organization. The "controversy" about ACORN has to do with their voter registration efforts. As often happens in voter reg drives, they hire young kids and pay them by the head. So what happens is they end up submitting dup and false apps. Because they tend to do this in poor (Dem heavy) areas, the GOP loves to grandstand about this when they get caught submitting bad apps. This has NOTHING to do with their housing initiatives. The purpose of their organization is to make sure people get into houses the can afford. They counsel people away from bad loans and getting in over their head. The GOP doesn't like this because it prevents their banker buddies to use their predatory lending methods. Apparently, they also believe that counseling people to get smart loans, refinance when they have bad loans, and be educated about home buying are bad things.

Another typical GOP talking point: Poor people are poor because they are stupid and lazy and get what they deserve (such as bad loans).

2 Things:

1. Since the ACORN provision was pulled, no money could possibly go to them.

2. I never said anything about 'poor' people, that is your language. I referenced the problem of financing people that could not afford their mortgages (and called it part of the problem.) That is not limited to the 'poor.'

I did not attribute that to you, but cited it as a typical GOP talking point. I am glad you don't buy that one. Sorry, if it seemed I was accusing you of that.

Didn't NoBoma also, as a lawer, represent ACORN at one time?

Kind of Funny that a Democratic supporter ,ACORN, is being investigated in numerous reports of voter registration. I can't believe that you liberals hate our country so much that you lie cheat and do what ever you can to get someone in office. Unbelievable.

So because an organization that typically supports the Democrat party is "under investigation," ergo by extension all liberals:

- hate the US
- lie and cheat
- do anything to get other liberals elected

What a post. Captures any number of stereotypes in one fell swoop.

BTW, nobody should read this post here as supporting ACORN, liberalism, or the Democrat party. I'd just rather see valid and supportable criticisms than unfounded name-calling.

I apologize, to anyone I have offended. I should not revert to child hood name calling and I apologize to you or anyone.

Can you answer the first question in my post? Did Obama represent them in a court, I believe it was in New York where this happened and fought a bank to give loans to those who could not afford because they were being so called racial.

I hope this is not flaming and trolling is it?

Dishonest AND stupid...the hits just keep on coming.

Nevada authorities seized records Tuesday from a group they accused of submitting fraudulent voter-registration forms including for the starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys.

Tony Romo is not registered to vote in the stateof Nevada, and anybody trying to pose as Terrell Owens won't be able to cast a ballot on Nov. 4, said Secretary of State Ross Miller, referring to star players on the pro football team.

State authorities raided the headquarters of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), a group that works to register low-income people...It has encountered complaints of fraud stemming from registration efforts in Wisconsin, North Carolina, New Mexico, Michigan, Ohio and Missouri.

For balance:

Desert Beacon: Nevada takes axe to ACORN: Vote Registration Investigated
Quote:
Who wasn't paying attention? "In early July, ACORN asked to meet with election officials to express our concerns that they were not acting on information ACORN had presented to them. ACORN met with Clark County elections officials and a representative of the Secretary of State on July 17th. ACORN pleaded with them to take our concerns about fraudulent applications seriously. One week later, elections officials asked us to provide them with a second copy of what we had previously provided to them. ACORN responded by giving election officials copies of 46 'problem application packages,' which involved 33 former canvassers." [TG]

So, now ACORN is "accused of submitting multiple voter registrations with false and duplicate names." [TPM] A reading of the affidavit in support of the search and seizure of ACORNs computers, files, and records sets forth a time line that, in turn, supports ACORN's statement. The "Division" opened an investigation of the questionable registrations on July 2, 2008 based on information from Clark County Registrar Larry Lomax. Note above, that ACORN asked to meet with election officials in early July because officials were NOT acting on the concerns raised by ACORN.

ACORN met with officials on July 17, 2008, "pleading with them to take our concerns seriously." The affidavit confirms this meeting and documents that ACORN "would be willing to provide such information and supporting documentation to the county for further investigation" of the duplicate and questionable forms.
So, ACORN alerts the proper people and offers to turn over the documentation and this leads to... a raid! That makes sense.

I just wonder if this election will break the record for homeless and felon voting....being that it's the Chicago machine involved, I'd say YES.....

i can't imagine what they were up to in ohio last week when they were allowing same day registration and voting.

"hey you!"

yeah?

"wanna vote"

sure

"if you vote for obama i'll take you to vote and get you some coffee or a sandwich"

ok, done

this may or may not have happened, but i have a gut feeling it was going on all over ohio last week.

The thing about that is once you get them to the polls, you have no idea who they are actually voting. So without any control over the outcome, I don't know if anyone is going to take this sort of risk.
