I think this video sums up the over-the-top attempts to wax this historical event positive. In a time of recession...do we need this?

Uh, this historical event IS positive. In case you haven't been paying attention, we're electing our first black president, which is a huge step forward for our country.
Why do you think 750,000 showed up to the Lincoln Memorial yesterday??? Because they felt like standing out in the bitter cold for hours for the hell of it? They're predicting 1.5 million for the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow, the most since LBJ. |

Sushi, at least the fact isn't being hidden that there is irresponsible spending going on when the economy is upside-down. The mask is off!

You do realize the Onion is not real news.....right? You don't really expect people to take you seriously if you are sourcing a parody news site, do you?

The Onion, seriously???
![]() Ekeen, is that you? I'm not a fan of the spending either, and if McCain was elected I would probably be bitching about it too. However, are we going to suspend the Super Bowl during these economic hard times? How much money many billions? trillions? have we wasted in Iraq? Many people are traveling miles and miles to see these events, and much of it is being paid for by private donations. A lot more money is being spent to accommodate the enormous crowds. But it's history. If I could be there I would. I hope they party their asses off. Quote:

Yes, I do realize what the Onion is all about and the great thing about satire is that it is quite funny because there is a ring of truth to its content.

Addressing the interjected topic, that merits it's own independent thread, the cost of the inauguration:
In 2005 Bush spent 42.3 Million directly on the inauguration. DC, the feds and other State and local government entities spent an additional 115.5 Million on security, clean-up and a holiday for some workers. Quote:
Which is close to the cited (though with unspecified original source) cost of $170 Million for Obama's inauguration - which figure bundles together the costs normally associated with an inauguration (the 45 Million or so from the Obama campaign / fundraising) and the remaining 125 Million that goes to security, clean-up etc, etc. If anything, given the much higher attendance in DC the costs for security and the like are effectively lower than those for the Bush '05 inauguration. (250K attendees for Bush '05, Up to 1.5 Million for Obama '09 inauguration). The merits of lavish inaugural festivities aside (good work for the caterers, hotels and other soft / tourist businesses in DC) the relative cost for the Obama inauguration is on par with that for Bush '05. |
