United States President Barack Obama "signaled a commitment to pragmatism not just as a governing strategy but as a basic value", according to unintentionally hilarious inauguration dispatch by the New York Times' Washington bureau chief David Sanger. Pragmatism, of course, is not a value, but rather the triumph of expediency over values. To call pragmatism a "basic value" is an oxymoron, a contradiction in terms, like "studied ignorance", or "impassioned apathy". Obama had plenty of that today, too.

"[Obama's] appearance on the Capitol steps was so historic that the address became larger than its own language, more imbued with meaning than anything he could say," added Sanger, which is to say that Obama said nothing memorable. Just what was historic?

This half-Luo tribesman from Hawaii whose African father had no connection whatsoever with the West African ancestors of American slaves, was not imbued, but rather hued, with significance. His melanin carried the meaning, which is to say that he was judged by the color of his skin rather than the content of his character, in a precise reversal of Martin Luther King Jr's famous phrase.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President-elect Barack Obama, who campaigned on lessening lobbyist influence in government, has chosen a defense expert who is currently a vice president and lobbyist for one of the country's biggest defense contractors to be his deputy secretary of defense.

Obama's transition office announced that William Lynn, an undersecretary of defense in President Bill Clinton's second term, has been nominated as Defense Secretary Robert Gates' deputy.

Lynn is currently a senior vice president at Raytheon, which has billions of dollars in Defense Department contracts and is the maker of the Army's Patriot Missile system and the Tomahawk missile used by the Navy. The company is also developing a global positioning satellite communication system with the Air Force.

As deputy secretary, Lynn would be involved in the process of budgeting and acquisitions, in addition to running the day-to-day operations of the Defense Department.

Obama's transition office acknowledged that appointing a lobbyist did not, on the face of it, seem in line with the president-elect's ethics stance

Well, before reading these excerpts I had never heard of this faux Spengler. Now I find myself in no way enlightended nor amplified after reading them.

TB, I was near the end of a very lengthy reply to this where I broke down every part of the article, when my computer crashed for the second time today (especially worrisome, because I bought it at Circuit City), and I lost it all. You should be glad you don't have to read it, but I still have to ask you, why post something like that? It's completely devoid of substance. I won't go thru all the details, but there are a couple of points which expose the author's incompetence. First of all, the title and the entire theme of the piece center around oxymorons, yet every time he tries to point out an example of one in Obama's speech or the Sanger article, it doesn't even fit the definition of an oxymoron. He also defines pragmatism as "not a value, but rather the triumph of expediency over values", which is not even close. The whole article is substandard, even in the realm of amateur bloggers. I only bring it up because your own posts are normally well reasoned and insightful. I would much rather read your personal thoughts on the subject, rather than a poorly written character assassination piece. I just don't see how that article adds anything to the conversation. Rather, I think it is only capable of denegrating the tone of responses to the type of blind partisanship that the author chooses to relish in. I'm curious to know if that article is in consort with your personal views, or if you simply posted it because it dealt with the subject at hand. I would be very interested in your response.
