Well, I think there is some flawed logic here. Rush is not hoping for Obama to fail, Rush is hoping for his supposed policies to fail. I think all Americans want the president to succeed. That does not mean being popular. That does not mean putting in policies that are not good for the country (even if you beleive in them). To me, being successful means making a lasting positive influence on the country.
As for being popular, Coleman Young is one of the most popular mayors of Detroit in history. He also destroyed the whole city, stole money, and separated the whole populous between racial lines.
As for pushing policy, Andrew Jackson was able to get almost everything he wanted including ignoring the Supreme Court (which at the time was very weak). Ask a Native American what they think about Jackson pushing his policies through. He was successful at getting done what he wanted, but it was not a good thing.
Neither of them I would call that successful (Although both are highly acclaimed). I think Rush is putting the cart before the horse, and assuming those Socialist ideals will be implemented. If they are, and they fail, then Rush will be happy. Yet if he decides to make this a better country, ignores party lines, and does great things for this country that succeed in making the USA ever better overall....well, then I am sure even Rush would be happy with that success. Yet Rush is assuming Obama will push Socialist ideals, and failure in those areas is what he hopes for. Honestly, if I felt like Rush did I too would hope for failure. I in no way want to see implementation of some of the Socialist ideals you see in Europe. It would only wider our gap with the Asian countries that will take advantage of such ideals. Yet I hope for success. The thing I am most scared of is Socialism has some initial benefits that take advantage of Capitalist pasts. The problem is they stagnate the country as a whole, while others pass us.
Anyway, I am not sure I made my point clear. I do hope Obama succeeds, but not in some sense of pushing through his agendy or popularity. I only hope he succeeds in making this a better country. That is the difference. Rush thinks he will push his ideals (or what he thinks are his ideals), and of course he wants him to fail. Yet I doubt he wants him to fail at actually making this a better country. The major problem is the idea of what makes this a better country. History will eventually tell the tale, and in hindsight if Obama made the USA better in most aspects I am sure even Rush will eat his words.
