| Political Conversation and Debate This forum is not a temporary one. It will exist up to, and after the presidential elections. Some people want to talk or even argue politics, other's don't. Let's see if we can apply some reason and understanding to the debate. |

Rush
Rush Limbaugh makes a valid point every now and again. But if this is not a mis-quote, he is being un-american and unfair. I did not vote for President Obama. I thought he was as much a media creation as a valid candidate. I felt the liberal position was and is wrong for American.
BUT President Obama was fairly elected. He is OUR President! He will be our President for either 4 or 8 years. It does absolutely no good to wish for his policies to fail. Whatever happens will affect us all. Let us give him a fair chance. Let us not be swayed by over-zealous positive or negative press. The media in America is corrupt. We have become a very negative society. We let ourselves be influenced by talk radio and slanted television. Let us all be bigger than this mindset. America First! |

Do I hope he fails as a president ,? No. Do I hope that the USA nationalizes all these businesses No.
It hasn't helped Conrail in 40 years. The government has no business running businesses. Btw how many of you have come in here for years blasting Bush and hoping he fails ? Rush is right in context. Keep the Gov. out of Commercial business. |

I always said Bush was failing. I never wanted him to fail.
Putting party politics ahead of what's good for America, as Rush is doing, seems pretty backwards .... especially from the right who spent the last 7 years hanging patriotism over dissenters heads. I don't believe Dayton's fears for America will come to pass. I just lived thru the last 8 years, which to me were just as bad as what Dayton fears the next 4 (or 8) will be, and I'm still here and I'm sure Dayton will come thru the other side just as I did.... so will the rest of you. But if you're sitting there and hoping that Obama fails.... your opinion about America no longer matters to me. You can hope his policies don't create a socialized system akin to Western Europe (That's the only description I saw, but I skipped page 3). You can hope he doesn't get re-elected. You can hope he doesn't get this bill or that bill passed.... but to hope he fails? Ridiculous.... you don't have to agree with his policies... I certainly am not asking you to. But if all you're concerned about is politics, then go [censored] yourself. As Jwins hinted at on the first page... I get tired of people treating leadership of a country like rooting for your favorite sports team. I get tired of the trolling. But, most of all, I get tired of the people not realizing that the politicians that say the things they say during the campaign also, by in large, don't carry real hate or contempt for each other. It's an act. And they perform these roles because it's what America "Wants" it's the only way we pay attention... |

Okay, so those who have a problem with those who say "I hope he fails", would it make any difference if you change the wording to "I hope his policy agenda fails to be enacted"?
Considering that the context of the message by Rush, Dayton, and others clearly indicate they mean the second statement when stating the first, what is wrong with saying it? I find it very difficult to believe many of you liberals didn't hope Bush failed to appoint conservative justices, increase federal wiretapping activities, privatize Social Security, or continue military agression in the Middle East. |

OK, I'll take the bait. If the policies of Bush got us here, and if the policies of Obama don't get us out of here, aren't we then stuck with starting all over again? Just for the record I didn't say anything about Limbaugh's wishes, pro or con. What I questioned was Daytonbuck's statements, seeking clarification on the first and second and refuting the third. |

The bigger question for me is where does Obama's policies take us. Sure, they may not be here, but just because we are no longer here doesn't guarantee where we go will be any better, just different. And of course, it could be a better place, but it also could be a worse place. Those like me who worry that Obama's policy agenda will take us to a worse place than now, obviously want those policies to fail being enacted....just like many on the left had hoped that Bush's policies regarding the Middle East had failed to be enacted.

I want Obama to succede with his foreign policy, but I also want limited Govenment. He has a hard road to hoe to satisfy me. People make way too much of Presidential power. All the purse strings are controlled by the Legislators. All the Pres does is say yea or nay when it comes to the money. |

Dayton, I have not one jot of "guilt" because of slavery, but I have an absolutely clear idea from an historian's view of things how slavery and segregation have shaped lives, economic and educational opportunity, and culture. To the extent that I support civil rights laws and limited affirmative action as a response to that historical reality, it is not because of "guilt" that I do so. I do have a sense of justice that is involved, and I do also have a pragmatic side that sees civil rights as a means to address on-going racism, and affirmative action as a means leveling a historically uneven playing field. One reason I support this is that it serves a purpose as a pressure relief valve for completely valid negative emotional responses to the discriminatory past. As in real life, when you wrong someone you should find some means to admit that wronging, both because it is cathartic for the person having done the wrong, and because it defuses anger and helps bring closure to the wronged. Now, just like in real life, that does not mean that even if I wrong you I need to grovel 24/7 for the rest of my life. Affirmative action should not be a part of the law forever. But if it exists for a couple of generations past when racism is in the minority view, that would be all right with me. Discussing things with you is almost pointless because you do several things almost constantly. One, you generalize to the point of any conversation being a waste of time. "Liberals think blah blah blah" Trust me, there is a wide variety of thought on almost any issue, including issues you disagree with. While you and Hannity like to take the most fringe view and ascribe it to all who disagree with you for "points" purposes, it is really annoying and an impediment to actual discussion of issues. Second, you like to assign positions to people despite never having asked them their opinions. I've lived in Mexico. I have some idea about the place. I have an opinion that we need to change the Constitution to bar Citizenship to those born in America unless their parents are citizens or the parents are non-citizens but here on valid green cards, etc. I think that more than ever our resources are limited, and that much like a "lifeboat" ,we cannot spend our limited financial and medical resources on the very elderly to preserve their lives beyond a reasonable point, nor can we spend it on millions of illegal aliens. That said, we need our vegetables picked, and the brothers and the white frat boys ain't gonna do it. So we cannot build a wall and keep all Mexicans out because Lou Dobbs is stroking out. Our economy would collapse even more. And because I support increased government health care that does not mean that I support socialism. It means that I do not believe that private health care is the most efficient means of delivering care to the poor and uninsured. I think that there are economies of scale that support a nationalized health care for the uninsured only. Folks with access to better health care will get the better docs and treatment. That is fine. But you fail to realize that socialized care is better than no care at all, and that there is a terrible burden to the work force and society to have that many uninsured people and their families ill and missing work, let alone becoming very ill because of a lack of access to wellness and diagnostic care, only to be shoved onto the private sector when they get so ill they need ER services or are so ill that they now qualify for Medicaid. Dayton, pick one of your rant subjects and tell us your solution to the problem instead of doing your hit and run "the Asian enjoys you and gator" comments without providing your solution. You make it clear that we are all untraveled clueless individuals lacking your insight and clarity. How about sharing a little of that. |

As for what's "wrong" with it, consider the following, and assume the remarks are made in the same context: People who think Jesus is Christ are morons vs. I do not think Jesus is Christ. It's not as simple as WHAT you say... HOW you say it matters. |
