He didn't really mean to stay off of all planes & subways. He just meant that if you see a M*ch*g*n cheerleader getting on ahead of you, you may want to think twice.

Not because of the swine flu but because of the methane gas they produce.

In '76, swine flu killed 1 person, while the inoculation killed 25 people in the United States.

I was in the military at the time, they made me get a shot. (Your government at work.) From what I had heard, I was never concerned with catching the swine flu, but was kind of nervous about being killed by getting inoculated.

Even now, more people die each year here from regular influenza than have died from all the swine flu outbreaks combined.

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is weeks away from a critical decision on whether to trigger mass production of swine-flu vaccine, which could affect the bottom lines of big vaccine makers as well as public health.

interesting discussion on if the obama admin will go ahead and have the vaccine developed by the private industry and those spend billions and be possibly seen as "wasting" money or will they run the risk of the swine flu popping up again in the fall in a worse form (a la the spanish flu of 1918)?

At the CDC, Sencer solicited the opinions of infectious disease specialists nationwide and, in March, called on President Ford and Congress to begin a mass inoculation. The $137-million program began in early October, but within days reports emerged that the vaccine appeared to increase the risk for Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare neurological condition that causes temporary paralysis but can be fatal.

Waiting in long lines at schools and clinics, more than 40 million Americans -- almost 25% of the population -- received the swine flu vaccine before the program was halted in December after 10 weeks.

More than 500 people are thought to have developed Guillain-Barre syndrome after receiving the vaccine and 25 died. No one completely understands what causes Guillain-Barre in certain people, but the condition can develop after a bout with infection or following surgery or vaccination. The federal government paid millions in damages to people who developed the condition or their families.

However, the pandemic, which some experts estimated at the time could infect 50 million to 60 million Americans, never unfolded. Only about 200 cases of swine flu and one death were ultimately reported in the U.S., the CDC said.

Missed it by THAT much.

Had a girlfriend contract GB back in the early 90s. It hit her in a matter of hours and took months to recover. It was like temporarily having MS.

But at least you won't get the flu...maybe.
