Nationals try to land Sosa with incentive - filled deal
The Washington Nationals have offered a nonguaranteed, incentive-laden major-league contract to Sammy Sosa, assistant general manager Tony Siegle said yesterday.
The Nationals previously had offered the slugger a minorleague deal with an invitation to spring training.
Sosa ranks seventh in career home runs with 574. He hit .221 with 14 homers and 45 RBI last year in his only season with the Baltimore Orioles. The Nationals also agreed to an one-year, $850,000 contract with catcher-first basemasn Matthew LeCroy. He hit .263 with 58 home runs and 209 RBI in 430 games in six seasons with Minnesota.
