The Indians announced that left-hander Cliff Lee underwent surgery this morning in Philadelphia, to repair a right-sided incisional hernia. Dr. Bill Meyers performed the arthroscopic procedure at Drexel University.

Lee is expected to participate in full team workouts when the club opens its spring training camp in mid-February in Winter Haven, Fla.

The 27-year-old pitcher had a more extensive surgery performed by Dr. Meyers to repair a sports hernia after the 2003 season and came back to pitch well the past two years.

Lee is coming off his best season to date, compiling an 18-5 record with a 3.79 ERA in 32 starts in 2005. His winning percentage of .783 led the American League, tied for the third best overall in team history and highest by a Cleveland pitcher since Hall of Famer Bob Feller went 13-3 (.813) for the AL champion Indians in 1954. Johnny Allen, who went 15-1 (.938) in 1937 holds the team record.

In 202 innings pitched, Lee allowed 194 hits and 52 walks while striking out 143. He tied Jon Garland of the Chicago White Sox for the second-most wins in the AL behind ex-Indian Bartolo Colon, who won 21 games for the Los Angeles Angels. He led all AL lefties in wins with one more than Randy Johnson of the New York Yankees.

He compiled a 10-2 record on the road and overall had a nine-game winning streak from July 18 until Sept. 22. The Indians went 23-9 (.719) in games that he started.

Lee was acquired by Cleveland with outfielder Grady Sizemore, infielder Brandon Phillips and veteran first baseman Lee Stevens from the Montreal Expos on June 27, 2002, for right-handers Colon and Tim Drew.

This doesn't sound like too big of a deal. He should be good to go next season.
