4. Octavio Dotel - ABSOLUTELY ECSTATIC OVER THIS DEAL! This was my Yankee highlight of yesterday (sorry, Johnny). Dotel will come back sometime between April and June, and could pay huge, huge dividends for the Yanks. If he can return to form, its Dotel-Farnsworth-the Great One in the 7th-8th-9th. Wicked.
are you getting the dotel that the astros had or the A's had?

Dude, the Yanks didn't lose any money last year, no matter what hogwash the Daily News reports. The team PRINTS money, trust me. Its a team with a Net Worth in excess of a billion dollars, a major NY network in its pocket, and a name that's essentially priceless (like Coca Cola).

yup, I am so tired of owners and the like talking about losing money. That is total BS, those guys are business men and not one of them is dumb enough to keep flushing millions down the drain. If they were all losing money then they would have gone the way of the expos

tsteele316: "they had a $200 mil plus payroll last year, and lost some scratch because of it."

Let me get this straight: a team that's LOSING money gives away another $80 million in contracts this offseason?? Teams that lose money act like the Marlins do - not the Yankees. If the Yanks were truly losing money, then why not pick up some of A-Rod's deal and ship him to a team for 3 blue chip prospects? They'd save about $15 million a year, and they'd be able to command top flight prospects for him.

"now continue to purge your farm system"

Like who?? Anyone on the farm we've given up the last 2 seasons? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Frye?

HL: "are you getting the dotel that the astros had or the A's had?"

The Dotel deal is a no-risk, high-reward deal. He costs no money, and anything he gives you is a bonus. If its back to Astros form, then its a very, very big bonus.

because cashman and steinbrenner operate under the guise of buying whoever they think will get them into the WS again. if the yanks farm system is so strong why would they have to command top flight prospects for A-Rod?

Ok. Give me a call when the bank forecloses on Steinbrenner.

Would any of you like to take up a collection for poor ol' George? You can send all donations to the NY Yankees Bankruptcy Fund, c/o Sloopy45, in Norwalk, CT 06850. We accept checks and cash .. no donation is too big.

"if the yanks farm system is so strong why would they have to command top flight prospects for A-Rod?"

a.) They don't have to command prospects for A-Rod, that was a hypotetical situation I gave you.

b.) The Yanks farm system isn't great, but it hasn't been "purged" as you suggested. In fact, last season they kept two great kids and one of them was 2nd in the the ROY voting.

They did get rid of their best catching prospect, Dioner Navarro, in the Randy Johnson trade in January of '05.

Their farm system was depleted the last few seasons. It's not like they had a slew of intriguing prospects to offer anyone. No way Phil Hughes is going anywhere. Eric Duncan is enticing, but is coming off a disappointing 2005.

It's hard though to examine minor leaguers and the projected impact they'll have in the league. It's weak right now, the MFY's realize this. If you look at their transactions from the past year, they're acquring far more prospects than what they're giving away.

EDIT: The psychoogical sting the Damon signing has inflicted has been greatly offset by the FA signing of Rudy Seanez.

sears: "They did get rid of their best catching prospect, Dioner Navarro, in the Randy Johnson trade in January of '05."

The organization was down on Navarro after he struggled at Triple A. And, they never thought much of Admiral Halsey (the other rookie/prospect given up in the RJ deal), who's turned out to be a halfway decent pitcher. Neither would've made the big club in the Bronx had they held onto them.

"No way Phil Hughes is going anywhere."

Agreed. They won't even listen to offers for Hughes.

"Eric Duncan is enticing, but is coming off a disappointing 2005."

Duncan was rushed to Double A this past season. He should've started the year at High A Ball. One thing that's disturbs me about the Yanks' farm system recently is that it seems they rush kids more than they used to. Its probably to make them enticing trade bait rather then groom them for the big club, which is disturbing. But, with Cashman's new 'autonomy,' there has been no interference from Tampa this offseason, Stick Michael is back to having a prominent voice in the organization, and if those things stay constant, I'm sure we'll be back on track in no time.
