Rules for the Catcher
Does the catcher have to be behind the plate? Can he go play in the infield? Or outfield? Obviously, you wouldn't want the catcher anywhere BUT behind the plate with runners on base. Or with 3 balls, or 2 strikes. But let's say its the first batter of the inning. Why not put the catcher out there somewhere so he can help get the batter out? Of course, you've got to have the ball-boy go get all the pitches that hit the backstop. And the umpire may not like getting hit with most of the pitches. But other than all that, is there any rule saying that the catcher has to be behind the plate?
Or how about in front of the plate? Put him about 6 feet in front of the plate, right in front of the batter. You'd have to find someone with a death-wish or with super-awesome body armor, probably, but the pitcher could pitch the ball, and the batter wouldn't see the ball coming until the ball gets there.

I've always wondered why the pitcher and catch don't switch places and the batter doesn't stand near first.... I think we need to invent a new game called Zurp Ball.

Absolutely not. I was just hoping for an answer for whether the catcher needs to be behind the plate. And, if not, there are some ideas for where a team could put the catcher to help them, defensively. They aren't necessarily GOOD ideas. Cripes - I wouldn't be willing to stand 6 feet in front of the plate.

Actually, I know you'd at least have to have a catcher for every two-strike count, since a batter can attempt to take first on a strikeout pitch that isn't caught.
