I didn't understand the main point of contention to be because he was the first latin player. So therefore the first amputee, gay guy etc would be meaningless.
I say retire it due to his being a HOF player and one of a kind humanitarin. Its got nothing to do with being any kind of groundbreaking Latin player.
When another guy comes along in a generation or two who can be a legit HOF player AND contribute off the field the way Clemente did then I'd consider him as well. Untill then Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente are a pretty exclusive club.

I guess my question would be this...
Do you view the retiring of Jackie Robinson's number as a representation of his greater contribution to race realtions in this country... or... only as a contribution to the integration of baseball.
I guess the point is... didi Clemente's philanthropic efforts and consequesntly his death contribute to a greater sense of follwing his example... or... was he jsut a great baseball player and a great person.
I mean.. I guess... I view Robinson's retirement as a symbol of baseball's contribution to the thousands of nameless faceless others who have fought for civil rights... and... furthermore... I don't think its probably over the line to say that he inspired other black athletes to use their influence to effect changfe in society as well... agreeing with their politics or not... but Jim Brown Ali, etc... saw the impact that Robinson had...
So... where is Clemente in this discussion?
I mean.. some athletes are very involved in the community/world... and do great things... what is Clemente's legacy as it realtes to this, I guess is y quyestion... and .. if they were to retire Clemente's number... is that the reason?
