Ready to settle scores

A confident Joe Borowski is long past his doubts as he takes over as the Tribe's closer
Sunday, April 01, 2007 Bud Shaw
Plain Dealer Columnist
Joe Borowski can take a punch. His career is a testi mony to it, but even then he isn't the most famous fighter from Bayonne, N.J.
If he's home walking down one side of the street and former heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner is walking down the other, Borowski's path would be the one less-cluttered.
"If I was walking down the street with Joe Schmo, nobody would recognize me," the Indians closer said.

If you're looking for something to make you feel good about Borowski owning the Indians' closer's job, his 36 saves in Florida last season should help. But if you still want assurance after the retirement of Keith Foulke and after sitting through the ninth-inning torture of 2006, well, at least Borowski doesn't come with the nickname The Bayonne Bleeder.

Pessimism outweighs hope among Tribe fans

Sunday, April 01, 2007

Where will the Indians finish in 2007?
The Indians will go only as far as their defense, back-end bullpen and shortstop Jhonny Peralta will take them. Look for this to be the year that reliever Fernando Cabrera finally breaks out to be that eighth-inning guy they've needed since they didn't sign Bob Howry.
Word is out that infielder Ryan Garko's glove is even worse than Travis "Pronk" Hafner's, but I think you'll find that his bat will win more games than his glove will lose. Pronk will solidify that he should be the Tribe's No. 1 priority to sign for the future as he comes in a close second in the MVP race.

White Sox, Indians both looking for better results

Monday, April 2, 2007 3:31 AM
By Andrew Seligman

Associated Press

CHICAGO -- The scene at the opener last year was something to behold.

Two jets roared above U.S. Cellular Field, and the Chicago White Sox unveiled a large banner commemorating the 2005 World Series victory -- the city's first since 1917.
Then, they opened the season in grand style, beating the Cleveland Indians 10-4.
Sure, the White Sox won 90 games last season. But all that added up to was third place in the American League Central and a spot in front of the TV during the postseason. The road back to the playoffs -- or the couch -- starts today when they play host to Cleveland again.

Couldn't ask for a much better start than today.

Knock the opposing starter out in the 2nd, and pour it on from there! 12-5 final.

I'd worry about the back end of that bullpen. Maybe today was an aberration for Borowski but maybe it wasn't....

Disclaimer: I'm not an Indians fan.

That's been my concern all along. I was underwhelmed by the old age home they brought in this offseason to help. Thing is, relief pitching is a crap shoot, you nnever really know when somebody's gonna get hot.
