Three-week warm-up
Indians get young players ready to move up the ladder with program
By Stephanie Storm
Beacon Journal sportswriter
CLEVELAND - Swirling snow during an early morning commute into Cleveland obscures a familiar landmark -- the giant toothbrush-like light poles of Jacobs Field. Young ballplayers are denied what is arguably the best view of the city.

Barfield savvy beyond his years
Indians' young second baseman grew up around the game, should help to solidify infield
By Stephanie Storm
Beacon Journal sportswriter
Josh Barfield remembers what it felt like to be a wide-eyed kid looking up to ballplayers.
While his father, Jesse Barfield, enjoyed a 12-year major-league career with the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees, Josh was luckier than most kids, who get the chance to meet their sports heroes once in a lifetime -- if at all.

Some tribe problems are good problems

BY ANDY CALL
Spring training is less than three weeks away, and Ryan Garko is still a problem.
It's not really a bad problem, at least from the Indians' point of view. There aren't normally many drawbacks to having a 26-year-old first baseman who hit the cover off the ball for seven weeks after being called up last season.

INDIANS
First things first for young Garko
Monday, January 29, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
All winter the Indians have been shutting the door in Ryan Garko's face only to crack it open an inch or two to give him a glimpse of first base.
Garko didn't do anything wrong last year when he hit .290 (54-for-185) with seven homers and 45 RBI in 51 games. Besides needing to improve defensively, he fit nicely into the middle of the lineup, especially after designated hitter Travis Hafner was lost on Sept. 1 with a broken bone in his right hand.

I am a little disappointed in the loss of Guthrie. I thought he was pretty decent down the stretch, plus he is a lefty. Maybe I missed something, but I thoight he was part of the long term plan. Bummer.
