A.L. Cy Young Winner?
We have:
Schilling: 3 CG, 226.2 IP, 206 H, 84 R, 35 BB, 203 K, 8.06 K/9, 21-6, 1.06 WHIP, .239 BAA, 3.26 ERA. Santana: 1 CG, 223 IP, 153 H, 69 R, 53 BB, 260 K, 10.49 K/9, 20-6, 0.92 WHIP, .193 BAA, 2.62 ERA. I think you'd have to go Santana. His numbers are better, and his team's offense isn't as good. |

I'm a Sox homer and I'd even give it to Santana. Schill's numbers are deserving too but like you said, Johan's are just a little better.

Who's your MVP pick, Sears?

That's a tough one.
If Anaheim wins the West, I'd give it to Vlad. Ortiz and Manny are going to get some votes but also will take some away from the other. Sheff deserves some mention too. It's too bad Seattle is as bad as they are or Ichiro would get it. You? |

cant really go completely by stats.....schillings pen has blown way too many of his sure-wins.
that being said....its santana MVP: Manny |

I haven't looked at the numbers closely enough yet. I don't think Vlad wins it, so that leaves us with ManRam, Ortiz, and Sheffield. (Or Sheffield and "Manny Ortez," John Kerry's favorite Red Sox player).
I think it all depends on whether Ramirez and Ortiz split the vote. A-Rod lost the 1996 MVP becuase he split the vote with Griffey. If 'Manny Ortez' was one person, I'd pick him, but since there are two of them, I'm putting the Yankee glasses on and picking Sheff. |

you have to give a good look at Miguel Tejada too...312...32...142...shortstop...
his numbers are better than sheffs and he is playing middle infield....he has also played nearly every game there.... cy young should go to santana.....hands down.... whats his droopy face on espn keeps touting rivera....but no way.... |

Di: "you have to give a good look at Miguel Tejada too...312...32...142...shortstop..."
I don't think Tejada (numbers aside) will get many votes becuase his team is so bad. A-Rod won it on a last place team, but there was no solid pick on any of the contenders. This year, there are four solid candidates on contending clubs. "whats his droopy face on espn keeps touting rivera....but no way...." You're right, Mo won't win it this year. Not even close, but IMO, he has been the best and most valuable player in baseball since 1996. Had the Yankees really made a statement in the regular season I could buy it, but they haven't pulled away from the pack. |

agreed sloopy....it will be between manny, ortiz and sheff......i just wanted to make sure tejada got some props for a great year.....
i would think its a manny v. sheff battle....i dont think the votes split for ortiz because he doesnt play the field.... |

Let's get a final call on this MVP debate. A week ago, I said (above) that Vlad wouldn't win it. That was, of course, before he went nuts, had the best week ever and vaulted the Angels into the Playoffs.
Vlad: 124 R, 206 H, 39 2B, 39 Dongs, 126 RBI, 52 BB, 15 SB, .337 AVG, .391 OBP, & .598 SLG ManRam: 108 R, 175 H, 44 2B, 43 Jacks, 130 RBI, 82 BB, .308 AVG, .397 OBP, & .613 SLG. Ortiz: 94 R, 175 H, 47 2B, 41 HR, 139 RBI, 75 BB, .301 AVG, .380 OBP, & .603 SLG. Sheff: 117 R, 166 H, 30 2B, 36 HR, 121 RBI, 92 BB, .290 AVG, .393 OBP, & .534 SLG. Upon further review, its gotta be Vlad. Of the four, he's scored the most runs, has the highest Average, is the only one with 200+ hits, and threw in 15 bags. Ortiz and Sheff's numbers fall a bit short of the top two candidates. |

I swear I would have typed exactly what Sears typed had he not done so already.
Sooo. . . I am a die-hard Red Sox fan and I would give the awards to Santana and Vlad. Vlad is more important, singularly, to his team than Manny or Ortiz. Santana has simply pitched better than Schilling, and voters love strong finishers. |
