Detroit- The Indians know what's wrong with right-hander Jake Westbrook's right elbow, but aren't going to reveal it until today.
"I will confirm that Jake saw Dr. Lewis Yocum on Friday," said GM Mark Shapiro. "I will confirm the we have a clear diagnosis of his elbow. We will not say anymore until Saturday."

Westbrook was examined by Yocum, one of the country's experts on the care and repair of pitchers' elbows, Friday in Los Angeles. He was accompanied by Lonnie Soloff, Indians head athletic trainer. Soloff traveled to Los Angeles after the Indians finished a four-game series Thursday night in Arlington, Texas.

I think you are right on target. Now I wonder what happens with C. C. Their pitching depth, if this is true, just took a big hit. I know that Byrd pitched very well last night but I don't think you can count on him for next season or even this season. It will be interesting to see when, or if, they make a move with C. C.

Westbrook needs season-ending surgery on right elbow

Detroit _ Jake Westbrook is done for the season and facing reconstructive surgery on his right elbow.

Lonnie Soloff, Indians head athletic trainer, was expected to go into details about Westbrook's surgery before gametime today at Comerica Park where the Indians play the Tigers in the second game of a four-game series. Westbrook was examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum, an expert in the care and repair of pitcher's elbow, Friday in Los Angeles.

The Indians placed him on the disabled list Tuesday with a sore right elbow. Westbrook suffered the injury in a May 28 start against Chicago.
The Indians were counting on Westbrook,30, being a key member of what they felt in spring training was one of the best starting rotations in the big leagues. The rotation is still formidable, but it won't be as effective without Westbrook.

I have no idea with the Indians should do now. I would think this is the end of Westbrook's career and he is scheduled to make $10 mil each of the next two seasons. The Indians really do not have quality players to trade except maybe for C. C. so maybe it is time to bite the bullet and put him on the market to see if we could get a quality bat and a decent young pitching prospect or something. I am really at a loss as to what they need. We do have some young arms in the minors but we lack position players so maybe it would be wise to trade C. C. for two good young positional players. Without Westbrook, I can't see them making a run at anything this year so they might as well get started on next year.

I wouldn't make that assumption just yet. Plenty of pitchers come back from major elbow surgery and he's still only 30.

The way that I read it was reconstructive elbow surgery. Regardless of the nature do you think he will be back next season. I really haven't heard of any pitchers having elbow surgery.

Maybe RB has something wrong with his arm also or I mean back. He probably will go on the DL sometime next week. If he doesn't, he should.

The Indians really need to make some type of move with their players come July but I just don't know what.

Detroit --- Jake Westbrook needs ulnar collateral ligament surgery --- commonly known as Tommy John surgery --- on his right elbow. He's expected to miss at least a year.

Lonnie Soloff, Indians head athletic trainer, said "80 to 85 percent" of pitchers who have ligament transplant surgery make successful recoveries. Westbrook is 30, but Soloff said age should not be a drawback in his comeback.

Soloff said the ligament used to repair Westbrook's elbow will come from Westbrook's left or right wrist.

Dr. Lewis Yocum, team physician for the Los Angeles Angels, and an expert on the care and repair of pitcher's elbows, will do the surgery. Soloff said it will take place in the next two weeks.

Another example of the braintrust keeping a guy on the roster too long. He's been getting raked all year long, yet they continue to trot him out there. Unbelievable.

Nice to find out that Westbrook had elbow surgery in 2002. I would think that his career is over. He might come back in 2010 but he will never be the same pitcher. That will be $30 mil down the drain for the next couple years.

There is supposedly an excellent young pitcher, Mike Huff, that was just promoted to Buffalo. They better get them up to Cleveland before he hurts himself like Adam Miller. They might as well get some worth out of his arm before it goes bad.

They can't count on Westbrook, who also had elbow surgery in 2002. According to the Tribe's medical people, the success rate for this type of elbow surgery is at least 80 percent. But healthy, when? Next June? Next August? Spring 2010?

Remember that Westbrook signed a 3-year, $33 million extension that began this season. This certainly doesn't make the Indians long to pay $100 million for Sabathia or any other pitcher.
