Goddamnit. Baseball drives me nuts. It's so disappointing that the Indians could not capitalize last year, because the AL is an arms race right now, and the Indians have the budget of [censored]ing Guatamala compared to the Yanks, Red Sox, Angels and Tigers.

The worst thing to happen to the Indians... salary cap in the NHL. Now the Tigers' owner can take all of that money he was spending on the Red Wings and dump it into the Tigers.

I hate to say, but the Indians are not in much of a different situation right now with Sabathia than the Twins are with Santana, the A's are with Haren, or the Marlins were with Dontrelle. Small market teams have to trade these big-time players because they just can't sign them. And you have to hope those prospects you get in return can peak at the same time. (I thought that's what happened last year for the Indians).


EDIT: From now on, I'm not just an Indians fan. I'm a fan of any small market team that goes out and prevents these teams from buying championships.

speaking of C.C., not such good news there. Shapiro has stated they will not use any other "pitcher" contracts as a barometer for what they offer C.C.

Translation: We will be hoping C.C. takes a home-town discount

I'd agree he's gone after this year. If that is the case though, the ownership needs to make a move and acquire solid talent. The worst thing to do is let the guy walk out of here without getting anything in return.

I'll understand if we're in the thick of it come trade-dealine next year and we decide to ride the season out in hopes of a world series, but if we're 6 or more back, I think it's time to unload C.C. and get something of value. And then boycott ownership for being stingy even though they were top 10 in profits 2 years ago.

not to hijack your Indians thread but I think the Tigers and Red Sox have to be WS favorites right now(assuming the Santana deal goes down). As a die-hard Detroit fan this is the most excited I have been for a baseball season ever.

I'd be excited too if the Indians could afford to trade for players of the caliber of Cabrera and Willis.

As it stands, I'm not going to blame the Indians if they ship C.C. now to get something in return. He's not signing a long-term deal here. We can't afford him.

two points:

1. cc is rumored to have an $80 million 5 year contract on the table right now.

2. the other pitchers as a barometer is more referring to the assinine deal that the Giants gave to Barry Zito, since that has long been rumored to be the gauge of what CC will want.

I have heard four years $80-95 million and that the Indians do not mind giving 20 mil plus a year just that they will not commit to a long term 7 year deal. One other thing that needs to be considered is that CC has been with this organization since he was a teenager and does feel that he owes them some loyalty. I won't blame him though if he walks for the big money. My big concern is that the Tigers just got stronger and that the Indians are really one bat away. There main concern should be the corner outfielders, they need to find a big bat for out there. I like Guitz and Francisco but they are looking at Jason Bay. Another position would be third base because Casey Blake puts up just average numbers for that position.FYI I like Blake for his grit but I wouldn't mind someone else. What does everyone else think they should do?

gutz and francisco are fairly interchangable from a numerical standpoint. so, if shipping off gutz, shoppach and cliff lee for Bay and ronnie whoever, the pirates current backup catcher i'd do it.

"grit" doesn't hit with RISP so I think we really need another 3rd baseman in addition to a power hitting corner OF. If someone would take Blake of my hands I would do it. In my mind, he is a quality backup infielder/outfielder and that's it.

I would do that deal in a heartbeat and would even give the Pirates another minor leaguer if that's what it takes to get Bay. We cannot keep on hanging to our prospects because they don't win championships if they are in the minors. I would even strongly consider trading Adam Miller because we really don't know what we have.

I have mixed emotions regarding CC. Holding him until the season starts probably would not get us what we could get before the season starts. My only hope is that ownership will be willing to pay out that 80-85 mil and have CC signed before the beginning of spring training. If not, I think we end up big losers in a trade situation during the season.
