"improving" is a bit of a misnomer. Detroit is improving for a 1 year run, provided the Mitchell report doesn't submarine some of their lineup. and even if it doesn't, they still hang their hopes on the notion that the oft injured 40 year old sheffield can still go, that pudge can still hang in there, than the gambler can give them a full season, and that dontrelle willis really isn't a hack. all of that while hoping ordonez can duplicate his career year numbers.
on paper, detroit is a better ballclub. however, a few injuries, and they are in some trouble.
as for the indians, if they give up a chunk of the farm to net haren and/or chavez, i'd almost bank on CC getting dealt if he doesn't sign before the trade deadline.

Totally agree with your comments regarding the Tigers. Plus there one year plan might not pan out if a couple of their "older" players don't even make it through the season.
I would like to make the deal for Harren because I don't think it necessarily means we still would not be able to afford C. C. Harren it is signed through 2010 starting and a little over 5 mil and increasing 1 mil each year through 2010. Plus getting Harren for really an "unknown" prospect like Miller does not bother me. I have heard they want Miller, Laffey, Sowers, and possibly Crowe. If they would take Lee instead of Laffey, I would say deal for Harren.
I am not sure about Chaves because he has been injured off and downed the past couple seasons and I would think that the price would be too steep if we wanted him to be included in a deal.

INDIANS
Byrd tells MLB of his HGH use
Tuesday, December 18, 2007 Paul Hoynes
Plain Dealer Reporter
Paul Byrd, one of two Indians employees named in the Mitchell Report, met with MLB officials in New York on Monday to discuss his use of human growth hormone (HGH).
Tim Laker, the other employee named in the report, is recovering from an undisclosed surgery. General Manager Mark Shapiro said Laker, a former Indians catcher who managed Class A Mahoning Valley last season, is still working for the team and will talk about his situation in spring training.
Recommendations in the Mitchell Report called for more "non-analytical" investigation into use of performance enhancing substances by players. Until recently, the only way a player could be disciplined was through a positive drug test. If Byrd is disciplined, it would be through non-analytical means because MLB has no test for HGH.
