Two of the biggest names in closing suggested over the weekend that they be taken out of the role for the good of their teams.
Brewers manager Ned Yost agreed with Eric Gagne's critique of his work and took the ninth inning out of his hands. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa agreed to give Jason Isringhausen a "mental break" as well.
Gagne (1-2, 6.89 ERA) is 9-for-14 in save situations, while Isringhausen (1-4, 7.47) is 11-for-16.

Tribe gains split after two shutouts

CLEVELAND Indians pitchers have been put on notice. All that is required of them to earn a victory is perfection.
Fausto Carmona worked a complete-game, 3-0 shutout of Toronto in the opener of Monday's doubleheader at Progressive Field. Cliff Lee followed with nine shutout innings in the nightcap, but the Indians fell, 3-0, in 10 innings.
"Our starting pitching is extremely strong," outfielder David Dellucci said. "They've been picking us up an awful lot. Hopefully we'll start putting runs on the board for them."
Runs may seem like a luxury when your starting pitchers have ERAs of 2.40 (Carmona) and 0.67 (Lee). But, as demonstrated in the second game, one man can't do it all by himself.
"That was as poor, if not the poorest, approach I've seen all year," Manager Eric Wedge said. "We gave away at-bats all night long. How many times can you hit your head against the wall?"
One man, however, actually did it all by himself. Asdrubal Cabrera turned only the 14th unassisted triple play in baseball history during the fifth inning of the nightcap.

Tribe notes: Indians will face outfield decisions when Choo returns

CLEVELAND The Indians are just weeks away from being faced with a tough roster decision.
Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, sidelined since having Tommy John elbow surgery last September, will begin a minor-league rehabilitation assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Buffalo. Choo arrived in Cleveland on Monday from Winter Haven, Fla., and was examined by team doctors. He will work out with the Bisons today.
"We got the full (medical) report, and everything seems to be good right now," Manager Eric Wedge said. "His bat speed is good. He's been moving around good. You still want him to stick with the program, but he's on target."
The 25-year-old Korean has been taking part in extended spring training since the season began. He just recently began playing full games in the outfield.
Elbow problems limited Choo to just six games with the Indians in 2007. He played 45 games in 2006, hitting .295 with 11 doubles, three home runs and five stolen bases in 146 at-bats.
The Indians said Choo can spend up to 20 days in Buffalo. When he does arrive in the big leagues, a tough decision awaits Wedge.

I know that Wedgie needs to get guys at bats but when I saw the starting lineup for the second game with Marte and "what's his name" in LF I knew we might be in trouble. I have no idea, yes I know they play again today, why he did not play the same lineup was the possibility of moving Francisco to LF and putting Gut in RF with JP at short. Our lineup is already pretty weak and he made it a lot weaker. I don't know maybe it's today's athletes but the guys in the 50s used to play doubleheaders and come back and played them the next day also. Maybe it's not the manager of the players.
