Gonzalez out at least 3 weeks
Knee fracture sidelines shortstop
BY JOHN FAY | JFAY@ENQUIRER.COM
SARASOTA, Fla. - Shortstop Alex Gonzalez has a compression stress fracture of the left knee and is on crutches, barred from baseball activity for three weeks. He'll be re-evaluated then.
Three weeks takes his inactivity to March 21.
Eight spring training games remain at that point. Players are usually given a week of working out before they're put in a game - that's if they're cleared to play.

Gil's bat shines, but then his quad balks; Bothersome injury hampers his bid to make the team
BY JOHN FAY | JFAY@ENQUIRER.COM
SARASOTA, Fla. - Jerry Gil was playing well enough this spring to get some attention.
He probably was not going to make the team, but he was showing that he could have a future in the big leagues.
Gil has two hits, including a three-run homer, in the Reds' first two games. His speed and arm are well above major-league standards. That, along with his versatility - he can play shortstop, third base and the outfield - caught Dusty Baker's attention.

Something to smile about
Phillips wins over fans now as Reds play for tomorrow
BY PAUL DAUGHERTY | PDAUGHERTY@ENQUIRER.COM
SARASOTA, Fla. - Anticipation hates a vacuum, so spring eyes have swerved from Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn to Jay (Big Thing) Bruce and Johnny Cueto.
Some of us wanted the Reds to trade a kid or two this offseason, for a quality starting pitcher. Deal the mystery of Later, for a solid slice of Now.
That's probably not going to happen. Get ready for 2008 to be one long test drive on the road to 75 or 80 wins.

Harang shakes off shaky start
BY JOHN FAY | JFAY@ENQUIRER.COM
SARASOTA, Fla. - Aaron Harang was not very good in his spring debut.
But you can go ahead and assume that his status as Opening Day starter will not be affected.
Reds manager Dusty Baker didn't declare Harang the starter for the March 31 opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Rosales makes an impression early in camp
BY JOHN FAY | JFAY@ENQUIRER.COM
SARASOTA, Fla. - Adam Rosales says he's at Reds camp for the fun and experience. He also could end up with the Opening Day shortstop job.
It's a long shot - a real long shot. Rosales has played just 67 games above the Single-A level.
But with Alex Gonzalez almost certainly out for Opening Day, Reds manager Dusty Baker is looking at all possibilities, and Rosales has caught his eye. Rosales went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the Reds' 12-11 win over the Pirates Saturday. He's 5-for-8 with a double, home run and four runs scored.

Left-hander Bobby Livingston agreed to a one-year contract with the Reds. Livingston had left shoulder surgery in September and is on the disabled list. He started 10 games for Cincinnati last season, going 3-3 with a 5.27 ERA. The Reds also signed Juan Duran, a 16-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic. ?
