OK, who planted that [censored] on Mike Stanton? This Mitchell Report thing couldn't have worked out much better for the Reds. I don't care anymore that they're letting him steal money from the team. Just get him out of the bullpen and off the team and give his spot to somebody who doesn't suck.

Did anyone else see Ricky Stone on the list? I know the people he hung drywall for have got to feel pretty betrayed right about now. I know the ball seems to travel farther for hitters who are juiced, but I didn't know it had the same effect for pitchers who are juiced.

2 things come to mind for me.

1. It looks like a sign that the cards are punting. The miseribly weak NL central is once again there for the taking if anyonce can play .500 ball.

2. George Grande is mourning somewhere right now as if he just lost a child.

I fear that competing for the central for a season will cost team it's future. I think we got screwed by the 99 season. If we had blown everything up Marlins style then and started building towards to the GABP opening up we could be in a lot better shape today.

They're going to continue to try to land a starting pitcher. That's Wayne Krivsky's mandate from ownership. The only limitation is he has to do it without giving up Jay Bruce. So far, that's what has kept the Reds from completing a deal with Baltimore for left-hander Erik Bedard. They continue to try to swing the deal without Bruce included. The hope is the Orioles will ease off their demand for Bruce and accept a package built around Homer Bailey.

Depending on who goes out with him I'm ok with it.

HB has been hyped as a savior for a few years because the Reds have had littl else to hold out hope over. Truth is he's a long way away from being the ace people hope for. The attrition rate with pitching prospects is so high I'm ok with flipping some if they bring a proven commodity like Bedard.

What I'm not ok with is the short period of time we would control Bedard(2 years iirc) and his stated desire to test the FA market at the end of that time. Plus I'm still not sure this team is ready to compete in this "window" management would be opening up.

I wish we could have put a package of our prospects not named Bruce together and gotten Haren away from the A's.

I would have liked to have kept Hamilton. I have this terrible feeling Votto, Bruce, Bailey, Cueto and any other half decent prospect will mortgaged for some mediocre pitching. Then the Reds have a .500 season barley make the playoffs, Dunn and Griffey are gone, and Krivisky repeats because the Reds were close in 08 they'll be close again as we lose a 100 plus games for five years in a row. Adam Dunn will move on and get more heat than AFraud by whatever team's fan base he signs on with.

Bummer. I loved Hamiltons skill set and I believe a full year in the majors will have him putting up really good numbers this year, not to mention he's one of the best defensive outfielders I've ever seen in person.

I hope this pitcher is on the big club all year, otherwise I think not such a good move.

I'm ok with it.

Volquez, HB and Cueto give us 3 high upside starters all under 24. Volquez is a MLB pitcher now. I'm always ok giving up a replaceable bat for good young pitching. (giving away bats for [censored]ty middle relievers is another story)

I liked Hamilton and wish him well but he's a beer away from being gone forever. Also no one knows how his health will be long term from all the drug abuse. WK just turned a rule 5 guy into two legit young arms.

Also this would seem to me a move that screams Bruce will be the CF in '08.

I'm glad they didn't give up any of the young core pitching, or Bruce, to get Bedard(if that is indeed a dead topic now). Long term sustainible success is only going to come if we have a deep pool of homegrown pitching, its is the most precious commodity in MLB, horde it.

I agree. You just don't know if what you got last year from Hamilton will be consistent or even near what you'll get in the future. He could go on to hit 30 homers a year or, more likely, he'll hit 15-20 a year, make a couple good/great catches a year but won't be that impact guy everyone thought he'd be. Given that the Reds are pretty set in the OF this year at least, he was expendable IMO.

Pitching wins championships. The Reds have offense in bunches but I think everyone agrees that pitching staff was a joke. I hope for your sake the Bedard deal is dead and buried though. Bailey likely isn't a #1, but he's easily a future #2 or #3 for a team ready to fight or 85-90 wins like the Reds will likely be doing this next year.

However this move makes absolutely NO sense for the Rangers. They have even less pitching than the Reds and even more outfielders. Unless there is another move in the offing for them, they just traded away one of their better young pitchers for a Rule 5 OF with a history of both injuries and drug issues.

I don't follow them at all but over at RZ(they are baseball super nuts) they say texas was actually depleted in the OF and it was a good move for both parties. Who knows, my initial reaction was just like yours.
