Williams' improvement shows
Right-hander gives convincing start for rotation consideration
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Managers never want to put their veteran pitchers in do-or-die situations, but Sunday's Astros game with the Braves was undoubtedly a last ditch effort for Woody Williams. The scenario was spelled out in simple terms by manager Cecil Cooper, even if he tried to soften the severity of the message. Williams needed to perform well on Sunday in order to merit pitching in his final spring game this weekend in Houston. If he pitched poorly, he was guaranteed nothing.

Ausmus to be emergency infielder
Backup catcher to add extra duties away from home plate
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Brad Ausmus is most comfortable crouching behind the plate, but he's also a fixture on the field as one of many "infielders" taking grounders during batting practice. Ausmus enjoys fielding grounders with his teammates, something he's done regularly since A-ball. But he's been taking grounders with more frequency lately, and for good reason. In addition to backup catching duties, Ausmus will be considered an "emergency infielder" for the Astros this season.

By Joe Frisaro / MLB.com
ASTROS 10, MARLINS 10 (10 innings)
at Jupiter, Fla.
Monday, March 24
Astros at the plate: Geoff Blum had a two-run double and an RBI single in his first two at-bats, but the shortstop exited in the bottom of the second inning with a left heel problem suffered during a swing in the first inning. Wigginton doubled and singled, driving in two runs in his first two at-bats....

Cooper unhappy with fundamentals
Plans to work on pickoffs and rundowns after miscues
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Pickoffs and rundowns are usually practiced early in the spring, but Astros players may find themselves spending the morning of their final Spring Training home game on Wednesday going over those basic fundamentals. After what Cecil Cooper witnessed during his team's 10-9 loss to the Tigers in Lakeland on Tuesday night, the skipper apparently feels a refresher course is in order.

GM Wade says second baseman could need four weeks to heal
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Kazuo Matsui could miss the first two weeks of the season while he recovers from a surgical procedure to repair an anal fissure. The second baseman was officially placed on the disabled list Tuesday, retroactive to March 21. Originally, the timetable for recovery was two to three weeks. But general manager Ed Wade said Tuesday Matsui could need four weeks from the surgery date of March 17 to fully recover and return to the field.

By Alyson Footer / MLB.com
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- As the Astros dropped their luggage off at the truck sitting outside of the main building at Osceola County Stadium on Thursday, the general feeling was one of overwhelming happiness that the team was finally heading home. "We're giddy," Mark Loretta said. "G-I-D-D-Y. Giddy."

Astros' Opening Day roster ready to go
25-man squad to include 12 pitchers, 13 position players
By Alyson Footer / MLB.com
HOUSTON -- The final day of Spring Training is exciting for players who have been guaranteed spots since day one, but for others, the end of the exhibition season is anything but a happy time. A range of emotions swept through the Astros' clubhouse on Saturday -- elation for the four who were informed they made the team, and disappointment for the two who did not....
