Best pinch hitting pitcher, I'll give you that. I do like the flexability he can give you if he proves he can be a legit #5 starter. Some other thoughts as we get closer to OD: -If Dusty can keep himself under control (ie not use them as starters) we could have a much better bench than we've had in ages. -C is better, bench is better, #5 starter is better. -CF, SS and LF are still a disaster and combined with Dusty could provide a toxic dose of low OBP at the top of the order. -Still not sold on any real defensive improvement because Tvirus is not a defensive upgrade over Dusty's son in law. EE still has issues and I'll believe AG plays a full season of effective SS when I see it. Everyone behind him is a defensive nightmare. -No one in the NL central other than the Cubs is clearly superior to the Reds on paper at this point. The Cubs have plenty of question marks of their own. So we have a weak division going for us, which is good. I still don't think they can play .500 ball mainly because I think AG won't make it out of April before he's back on the DL and we have someone at SS who isn't a real MLB caliber defensive SS. Plus if everyone of the 4 good players we have isn't having a good year this offense will struggle BIG TIME. Also Dusty is so hell bent on "manufacturing" runs he's going to have guys running into outs and sacrificing way too often. They may want to play small ball but they still run the bases like Freel (read that to mean complete dumbasses). Not to reopen the great small ball vs 3 run homer offensive debates but there is no arguing that you must have a success rate greater than 70% for running to be a positive run creating experience instead of a negative one. Some key stats I'll look at early: GP for Alex Gonzales CS rate for the whole team OBP for WT Give me 120+, <30% and .340+ respectivly and I think you'll see the first year of .500+ that we've seen in ages. |

![]() Give Dusty time, he'll kill them all by himself. He doesn't need any help. BTW I'd pay money to see a Dusty Baker created science project. That would be some high comedy. |

Read on Peter Gammons blog today the Reds could possibly be shopping him around. He is due to make 12 mil next year.

Harang, Arroyo and Cordero (followed any time soon by BP) all need to start finding new homes. There is talent in the system to take their place and give you similar production for a fraction of the money. |

yeah but how soon with this talent be ready?? it's getting old being out of contention by the all star break.....

Owings and Baily look to be ready to give you the same production as Arroyo this year. It depends on which Harang we get this year. 2008 Harang isn't hard to replace. Cordero could implode any minute and closer is an overrated position any way. You can put any good reliever in the 9th innning and he'll rack up saves. You aren't going to fully replave BP, especially the glove but we have what seems to be the worlds supply of middle infielders who could give you a similar bat. Maybe one that will see more than 3 pitches in any given AB. They wouldn't give you GG defense at 2B but they don't cost much ether. I'm not saying trade them just to trade them but they are getting older and more expensive and that means its time to at least be thinking about moving any or all of them. |

Just got handed the 2009 Cincinnati Reds Group Ticket Sales brochure at my office.
I did not know that you were offered your choice of either being the "Captain of the Game" or assigned the job of "Delivery of the Game Ball" for a purchase of 750 to 999 tickets, or that you earned the opportunity to throw out the "Ceremonial first pitch prior to your game" for a ticket reservation of 1000 seats. For you bobblehead collectors (according to the event guide): May 9 - Joey Votto July 4 - Jay Bruce July 18 - Fans Choice Aug 15 - Brandon Phillips Other notable giveaways this season that don't suck: April 25 - Fleece Blanket April 26 - Brandon Phillips Gold Glove (Kids) May 23 - Reds Cap June 6 - Team Baseball Card Set June 20 - Mesh Jersey (Adults) Aug 2 - Jay Bruce Mesh Jersey (Kids) |

They should have Alex Gonzales is off the [censored]ing DL night. First 10,000 people who can walk into the park under their own power get a "I'm more mobile and cheaper than a sea bass" t-shirt. You can probably have 2-3 of them in a year and maybe actually get rid of all the T-shirts.
The "A Gon will magically heal and be our everyday SS, there is no need for any backup on the roster that can play even a passable defense" plan isn't looking so hot Walt. Of course not too many people outside of that MENSA chapter in the front office ever thought it would. [censored]tard. He's hurt again. |
