I wouldn't either except for the fact that the Reds are going to likely be in a position to be able to give up Dye (face it, his stats may jump due to the bandbox that is GABP) at the trade deadline for some higher quality pitching and/or position players who can bring more to the table than either Dye OR Bailey could.

I see the Reds doing this and then flipping him for some pitchers in July if the Reds are well and truly out of it again.

Add to that he can play one of the corners very well, has a veteran bat to help Votto and Bruce and can also steal you a base or 3. This isn't like trading for Julio Franco or something, Dye still has a couple years left in him.

He and Hannigan won't be a horrible combo behind the plate...If we can get a .750 OPS out of him we will be ok...Anyone know about his defense?

I dunno about his defense. How well does he call a game?

He speaks Spanish (obviously) so that's a plus with Volquez & Cueto around.

not the best, I'm afraid. Led MLB with 10 passed balls (Eddie Taubensee, any one?), tied for 3rd worst with 9 errors and only threw out 20% of would be base stealers.

Well Hannigan will be there and he has good defense...So I could see a split of like 110-52 or maybe 100-62...


I did just see that we are giving up 2 prospects in this trade...Will be interesting to see who, but don't really like that idea that much...

Edit: Justin Turner and Bradon Waring are the two prospects...Waring is not a huge lose...He is a power hitter, but that is really all...Strikes out quite a bit...Turner is a pretty good player...He doesn't really flash at you, but has continued to get the job done from level to level...

In all I am ok with this trade...this is the best thing about having a deep farm system...A couple years ago these two would of been top 10 prospects in our system now they are in the 15-20 range or so...

Club would send Freel, prospects to Baltimore for veteran catcher

LAS VEGAS --- The Reds appear to be "very, very close" to acquiring catcher Orioles catcher Ramon Hernandez in a trade for utility player Ryan Freel, a source told MLB.com.

The deal would include Minor League prospects Brandon Waring and Justin Turner going to Baltimore, according to a source close to the negotiations, while Cincinnati would reportedly receive $1 million in cash -- pending approval from the Commissioner.
Hernandez is slated to make $8 million in 2009, with a 2010 club option worth $8.5 million with a $1 million buyout.
Freel is scheduled to make $4 million next season. In 133 games last season, Hernandez batted .257 with 15 home runs and 65 RBIs. Defensively, he stopped only 19.5 percent (24-for-123) of runners stealing.

Return to Cincinnati one option for lefty reliever

LAS VEGAS -- Lefty reliever Dennys Reyes is open for a second tour in Cincinnati with the Reds.

Last week, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty revealed that there had been talks with Reyes' agent. This week at the Winter Meetings, baseball sources revealed that the two sides are still talking and the interest remains.
Reyes, who pitched for the Reds from 1998-2001, is also talking to a handful of other teams. Most of the teams involved are discussing two-year deals, it's been learned. Indications are that Reyes is seeking something similar to the three-year, $12 million contract Damaso Marte signed with the Yankees last month.

Lefty has narrowed interest to three teams; decision expected soon

LAS VEGAS -- Free-agent reliever Arthur Rhodes is close to choosing his new team, and the Reds remain in the race.
"Arthur is getting to point of making a decision in the next 24-48 hours," Rhodes' agent Dan Horwits said Tuesday. "The Reds are still a part of it."
Horwits said Rhodes narrowed his interest down to three teams, but would not disclose the other two clubs besides Cincinnati. The clubs that are out are starting to be notified. No details about the offers were disclosed.
