Reds finalize deal with Rhodes Reliever inks two-year, $4 million contract with Cincinnati CINCINNATI -- This wasn't your typical introduction for a free-agent signee. Fireworks, a light show and a raucous introduction were Arthur Rhodes' first experiences as a member of the Reds on Friday. It just so happened to be Redsfest weekend, and Rhodes was brought to the Duke Energy Center moments after he finalized his two-year, $4 million contract with Cincinnati.

Still not sure on what we will see from the pen for sure right now... Gotta assume that it is... Coco Burton Rhodes Bray Lincoln Then you look at some young guys or maybe Weathers if he comes back... young guys include... Josh Roenicke Carolos Fisher Danny Herrera Robert Manuel Nick Masset I think they give the long releif to Masset...Which leaves one of the other 4 as the last guy in the pen...I would say Roenicke wins that out of ST...Then you have 3 capable guys on the 40 man available from AAA if someone gets hurt... We have a reliable closer in Coco, two lefties in Bray and Rhodes...a couple of setup men in Burton and Rhodes... Not a bad pen...Looks to be much better than in years past...

I would have to assume with moving Freel that we will go after some sort of vet OF somewhere along the line. Probally waiting to see where we can get a bargin.

I've been slacking...
Weathers is on board for another year. Another one I missed was the signing of Laynce Nix. I was just seeing which of you guys was going to pick up the slack around here... now I know.

Eliminated During Spring which is no more true than.. Completely Useless By September I like the Taveras signing. I don't like his AVG or OBP, but I like the signing.

Leave it to the Reds to go and find the one player in baseball that is a worse option in CF than Corey Patterson....and sign him to a two year deal. I can't wait to hear how much they paid for this cod sack. CP just signed for 1 year at 800K ish IIRC. I bet we doubled that....for each year.
Un[censored]ingreal how bad this signing is. This is our everyday starting CF and leadoff hitter and the MFer makes an out 70% of the time he comes up to the plate. It's hard to know what stats to put up to show what a pile of suck this guy is offensivly because there are just so many to choose from. Every measurable defensive metric has him as an average defender at best and even though he is indeed fast, for his career the [censored]er gets caught stealing over 25% of the time. Hell you could have kept Freel, use Hopper or give a rookie a shot for free, the worst they could do is be as bad as this [censored]stick. Wait untill these cockholes run Jerry Hairston JR out to left, Tavares in CF, A-Gon at SS and expect us to get excited about 2009. I think whatever Mike Brown has is viral. Walt J comes to town, catches it and just gets dumber than a bag of hammers. [censored] me.

Sounds like he should be credited with a stolen base on the occasion that he takes a base on balls.
Small market teams have no room to bitch about competitive balance if they continue to sign players at replacement level or worse to multi-year deals and make them de facto starters. Yes, most of the good teams are good because they have more money. They are also good (and have more money) because they don't flush it down the crapper on guys like Willy Taveras. If Taveras were somehow employed by a halfway intelligent franchise he would only be used as a pinch runner and spot starter... in AAA.
