No they don't.

But in case you were wondering, he was looking for $50 million over 3 years.

Considering he was coming off a contract where he was making north of $16 million per, asking for a bit of a pay raise is to be expected.

The owners used the economic downturn brilliantly this past off season.

No one (FA's) outside of the superstars made anywhere near what they would have made the year before.

Funny how baseball mirrors life, the rich got richer and the middle class got to suck on it.

Exactly.

His price was set even before the Yankees were eliminated and everyone knew it for the most part.

Next year we'll see what he gets, but my guess is he'll return to the east somewhere for something around 10-12M....

So guys do you think we will make any deals in the next month or so?

IMO, this teams anemic offense gives me no reason whatsoever to be excited other than maybe a third place finish or another after the All-Star break implosion that sees the team play the most dismal baseball a team can possibly play this side of Rookie Ball.

Like the rest of you I see potential with a good solid core of young players but we can always can count on managment to somehow screw that up with the superb offseason moves they always make. Here are a couple of moves I would like to see happen before the end of they year.

Trade the following players:

Arroyo, Harang, and Cordero.

These are the only guys that have any type of value that would help improve the club for the future without affecting our core group of youngsters.

I know the Angels, Rangers, Mariners, Twins are in the market for pitching with the Rangers having the best available prosects (stole that from Gammons this morning). What do we do?

Fire Dusty Baker. This guy sucks. PERIOD.

See ownership stop stroking the fans by saying they are committed to winning while making [censored]ty decisions in player development, signings, etc.

Send Jay Bruce to the Tony Gwynn School of Hitting instead attempting to be a poor mans Adam Dunn (same batting average but fewer home runs). This kid has to much potential to be hitting the way he has thus far.

Some how, some way get rid of Gonzo (I think his contract is up after this year), release Willy T and take the hit. It will improve the immediately.

Sign GOOD players. Guys that are team first, good locker room guys and guys that will teach the young core guys to become better.

All of those proposed moves are good ideas.

This kinda reminds me of the saying, "If my aunt had balls..."

We're talking about the Reds. I'll be shocked if they make even one of those moves. Instead they're probably scheming for a way to bring the next (or the actual) Rheal Cormier to the team.

If you're punting the season by dealing two starters and the closer, then the Reds have to ship out Weathers and Rhodes too. There's no reason to have $7.5M+ tied up in two 40-year old setup men (Rhodes $4M for two years, Weathers the ridiculous $3.5M deal he got for this year with a club option for 2010, or a $400K buyout).

That's the problem the Reds are in ... they've got three starters and the 'pen to contend in a seven-game series now. They're really only short a couple of bats (the WT playing everyday problem notwithstanding).

The Reds are wrapping up a 4-under .500 June pending today's results and slid a whopping half game off the pace being set by the Brewers and Cards. Really, they were 2.5 games back on May 30, and now they're 3 games back on June 30.

All it takes is some fluke collision with Ryan Braun running into Pooholes at first base during a Brewers/Cards game and suddenly the Reds have the best team in the division. [censored], they kept pace with both teams ahead of them the entire month of June despite not having three-quarters of the starting infield, Volquez, their everyday catcher playing 1st, Phillips playing with a broken thumb, a bunch of un-signed FAs that made the roster out of spring, and Willie T batting 0-for-an-entire-[censored]ing-month in CF.

The Central looks pretty mediocre this year. I'm not ready to hit the reset button just yet.

Agreed.

According to the article linked above they were hot and heavy after DeRosa. That tells me they think they have a winner and are just missing that last little piece which of course is, say it with me now...a guy with verteran presence who can give you proffessional at bats and knows how to win.

Thinking this team is a Mark DeRosa away from the playoffs is up there with thinking that signing WT was a good idea. Both leave me less than confident about our FO's vision for the future.

Another stellar outing by Yo YO. 5 1/3 6 ER 10 hits and Dan Haren takes him deep. I cant believe so many Reds fans wanna bash Micah when Arroyo is going out there every outing and is effectively picthing BP.

Well, I know he has a few clinkers every year but Bronson has the 2nd most wins in the last calendar year (behind Halladay). I'd rather have a guy who typically gives 3-4 of 5 quality starts rather than a guy like Owings who puts up 1 in 5 if you are lucky.

Again with not bunting Dickerson. Bottom of the eighth, one run game, Richar on first, none out. Dickerson flashes bunt on first pitch, wild pitch, Richar to 2nd. So instead of then bunting him to third, they let him swing away and he pops out. Ramon then singles to left, which would have tied it. Instead, we now have runners at the corners and two outs (thanks to a Bruce pop out).

I had to break down some shipping cartons and missed the bottom of the 9th.

I come back and see the Reds tied it up, but the box score has this:

Quote:
D Sutton grounded into fielder's choice to second, J Hairston Jr. scored, B Phillips out at second.
When did the Reds sign Don Sutton?!
