Jeremy Sowers throws seven shutout innings...but don't get too excited, the M's offense = the Tribe's pitching. Of course Abreu and some other scrub (I don't even care enough to look at the box score for his name) allow three runs.

But hey, back-to-back wins for the 8th time this year! They are due to start winning now that the season is long over...just in time to save Wedge's job.

Cleveland Indians get Class AAA closer Jess Todd to complete Mark DeRosa trade - cleveland.com

SEATTLE -- The Indians have acquired right-hander Jess Todd from St. Louis to complete the Mark DeRosa trade. He will report to Class AAA Columbus in the next couple of days.

Todd, 23, is 4-2 with 24 saves and a 2.20 ERA in 41 appearances for Class AAA Memphis. He has 59 strikeouts, 13 walks and 39 hits in 49 innings. His 24 saves currently lead the Pacific Coast League. The opposition is hitting .214 against him.

He made his big-league debut with the Cardinals on June 4, allowing two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings against Colorado. He struck out two and walked two.

Todd, 5-11, 210 pounds, was the Cardinals' second round pick in 2007 out of the University of Arkansas. The Indians received right-hander Chris Perez from the Cardinals on June 27 in exchange for DeRosa.

Will be interesting to see what comes of this. The blockbuster trade of Lee and VMart for Billingsley/Kershaw, Loney, and 3 prospects has been refuted by both clubs but it sounds as if there are some talks going on.

Really hoping they can get something done for at least one of Lee or Victor

LATEST ON HALLADAY, LEE AND V.MARTINEZ - Hardball

--The Rays and Red Sox are both talking to the Indians about deals that would bring them both Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez. Tampa is willing to part with touted pitching prospect Wade Davis. The Red Sox are not quite there yet in willingness to deal Clay Buchholz. Texas and Milwaukee also have eyes for Lee while the Giants New York Giants are considering Martinez.

The Phillies also are very serious about Lee. Philadelphia prefers Halladay, but one AL executive said, "We will not get to Friday at 4 p.m. (the deadline) and the Phillies have not added Halladay, Lee or (Jarrod) Washburn." So this executive said the Indians will probably wait until the last second to decide where to move Lee because they want to have Philadelphia in the bidding if at all possible.

However, another AL official threw up this caution: "If Tampa losses three straight to the Yankees you might not only remove one bidder from the process, you might have a team suddenly making their pitching even more available, notably (Scott) Kazmir."

--One club executive said he would bet "1,000 percent" that Cleveland moves Lee and Martinez because of financial reasons. This executive said that the economy has hurt the Indians as bad as any club and noted that the three players who make the most for the Indians next year are Travis Hafner ($11 million), Jake Westbrook ($11 million) and Kerry Wood ($10.5 million).

IF they deal both of them, Shapiro better make damn sure he gets a good haul in return

Interesting that the Cards parted both with their MLB "future closer" and their AAA closer. Not sure I like that.

As for Lee/Martinez, I sure wouldn't mind getting Kershaw as a piece of a deal. He looks like he's starting to turn the corner with his control issues in the majors.

I dont think the economy has hurt the Indians... because they deal with the same market that the top earning Cavs have...

I think its more of the fact that what they put out on the field is frustrating to watch and isnt winning.

As my boy Dan Gilbert says; "Money doesnt lead, it follows". Maybe if Dolan would spend, we would earn.

Lee and Martinez's vaules are both higher than they will ever be, and with many teams thinking they're "one piece away" from winning the big one I really think they need to go.

While Victor is a good/great offensive catcher his output at first base, which I feel will be the majority of his future is only above average.

Gotta hand it to Shapiro. He got DeRosa for next to nothing then turned that around and got two potential closers out of it. While it's idiotic to think either guy can actually be sucessful in Cleveland it's still a good haul.

I just don't see how they part with Kershaw. He's already a stud at 21 and will only continue to get better. With that being said if the Tribe is offered Kershaw and a high end prospect for Lee they have to take the deal

It also doesn't help that the biggest off season signing was a complete bust in Wood. This team really is no different than the 2007 team that had so much success, the only thing was that year Carmona pitched out of his mind and the bullpen was automatic.

a few comments about the last few posts:

1. what cleveland got for derosa was very good value.
2. teams aren't ponying up prospects like they used to, getting a great return on lee or vmart is going to be tough.
3. the "dolan doesn't spend" theory is mostly hogwash. cleveland is in the top half of the league in salary. they problem is that roughly $34 million of $81 million is tied up in 3 players, a part time DH, a starter on the DL, and an ineffective closer. small market teams making that kind of salary investment need to do it on every day players or starting pitching. closers and pen guys need to come from within the system. small market clubs can't afford to pay for those.
