Cleveland Indians sign Luis Vizcaino, send Jeremy Sowers to Class AAA Columbus

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed free agent right-handed pitcher Luis Vizcaino to a free-agent Major League contract and have added him to the 25-man Major League roster.

To allow room for Vizcaino on the big league roster the Indians optioned left-hander Jeremy Sowers to AAA Columbus after yesterday's game vs. Chicago.

Vizcaino, 34, began this season with the Chicago Cubs, recording four scoreless relief appearances (3 2/3 IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 3K, .154AVG) before being designated for assignment on April 23 and later released. This spring he appeared in 12 games for the Cubs, limiting hitters to a .244 (10-41) average against with 13 strikeouts in 10.1 IP (11.3K/9.0IP this spring). He will wear No. 47.

yeah, he seems to be the best candidate but they would once again be down to one lefty in the 'pen. to make things worse Sipp is not really supposed to be pitching on back to back days.

I know that you're not supposed to rush guys up to the major leagues because it might be detrimental to their psyche or whatever but I do not understand why they do not move a guy like the pitcher in Akron who has about a 1.00+ ERA up to Columbus and see what he does at the AAA level and then if he performs well move him to Cleveland. The Indians seem to take their time, at least to me, in bringing up pitchers while other teams seem to be willing to take a chance even if the guy is young. I guess I'm just not a big believer in worrying about a athlete's psyche.

I assume you're talking about Rondon. They actually just moved him to the bullpen. It's debatable if that is the correct move but their thinking is that he has a better chance to help this year in the bullpen than in the rotation. The reason for that line of thought is that he currently only has two quality pitches and his secondary pitches still need developing. You can get by in the bullpen with two pitches but not as a starter.

Might not be a bad move. IIRC Papelbon began his career as a starting pitcher.

I believe the plan is to fast-track him so that he can help them this year. However, he's only had one appearance coming out of the bullpen at Akron. I don't think you want to put him in a new role and bump him up to a higher level all at once.

It's too bad David Huff is off to a slow start this year. There is a golden opportunity for him to get a shot in the rotation. As for now I'm thinking either Laffey goes back to starting or ? comes up from Columbus to temporarily fill the hole from Sowers demotion.
