Japanese pitcher Junichi Tazawa agreed to a three-year contract with the Boston Red Sox after rejecting offers from three other major league teams, The Boston Globe reported.

Penny, who would be in the Red Sox's starting rotation, will have to take a physical and the two sides are still working out the language of the contract.

Penny, 29, struggled last season with the Dodgers, going 6-9 with a 6.27 in 17 starts and two relief appearances. He was shut down in September and placed on the 60-day disabled list with a sore right shoulder.

Penny posted a career year in 2007 by throwing 208 innings with 16 wins and a career-low 3.03 ERA.

I like Penny. Had an off year last season, but is one of the harder throwers in MLB. Beckett, Lester, Dice-K, Penny and Wakefield... not bad, with Bucholz there too. Also added Ramon Martinez to the bullpen to add another great arm then Okie and Masterson before Papp. I'd like to add Baldelli and trade for Saltalamacchia and would be very content. Getting Texiera would have meant losing Mike Lowell.... and that would have flat out sucked.

Rocco Baldelli is scheduled to be at tonight's Boston Baseball Writers dinner at the Westin Waterfront Hotel to accept the Tony Conigliaro Award. Will Baldelli have some good news as to his whereabouts for next season? And will his new employer be the Red Sox?



According to sources close to the talks, the 27-year-old Baldelli is inching closer to a deal with the Sox. Boston has done extensive background work on Baldelli's health, including a mitochondrial disorder that has been rediagnosed as the less severe channelopathy this winter.
Sox general manager Theo Epstein declined to comment on Baldelli

Not a bad pick up season...Penny, Baldelli and Smoltz. Then Tazawa, Martinez and Bard. Pitching should be much deeper across the board.

This is simply heartbreaking.
John Smoltz was a part of so many good baseball memories for me. Boston is getting one of the last great gentlemen of the game - a hero to a community and an October assasin.

If his elbow and shoulder stay healthy - give me Smoltz in a Game 7 over Sabathia or any of those other hucksters the Yankees can trot out there.

The rest of Red Sox roster is taking shape, with the club coming to terms today with a pair of well-known players who have battled injuries and health problems in recent seasons.
Shortly after the Red Sox formally announced they had agreed to terms with former Tampa Bay outfielder and Cumberland, R.I., native Rocco Baldelli on a one-year contract, the Associated Press reported that former Cy Young Award winner John Smoltz has reached a preliminary agreement to join the Red Sox, ending his lengthy and remarkably successful association with the Atlanta Braves.
Smoltz, 41, will sign a $5 million guaranteed deal with Boston that includes the possibility of earning another $5 million in bonuses. The Smoltz deal was expected to be finalized later today according to a source familiar with the negotiations, the AP reported.

As a Braves fan I am very disappointed to see Smoltz go. I can't necessarily blame him for going to Boston. That being said, he is a shell of his former self......I'm not sure how much he has left in the tank. Atlanta probably should have re signed him out of respect, but then again they don't have the money to throw around like Boston.

Agree 100%. Right now the Bravos have bigger problems than loading up their lineup with 40 year old pitchers who probably won't be ready to go till June.
Frank Wren needs to secure us a solid left fielder and go get Peavy for chrissakes!

That said - if Smoltzie gets a WS start in October for Boston, I will be physically ill watching him take the mound in Fenway in front of all those New England douchebags.
