LeBron's options in 2010 and breaking a promise to myself

I said I wouldn't do this. I wouldn't write about LeBron James leaving the Cavaliers in 2010. But then Chris Broussard, one of my favorite NBA writers, wrote this article about LeBron James considering European offers. Bob over at CavsBoard wrote an outstanding response. Rick over at WFNY pretty much summed up my feelings about the whole thing. And TrueHoop waxes poetic on the topic as well.

Do you recognize either of these players? Me neither. That pretty much sums up why LeBron James playing in Europe is a bad idea.

If you're like me, it just feels like people are throwing, well, you-know-what against the wall and seeing what sticks. LeBron and Jay-Z. LeBron drops 50 at the Garden. LeBron wants to be a global icon so he'd go play in Europe. I'm sure if LeBron James has a huge two weeks during the Olympics the rumors of his departure for China in two summers will start. But what good are these reports without a little perspective? I'll give it a shot.
Let's start with the Cavaliers. They can offer LeBron James more money and more years than any other NBA team. In the summer of 2010 they're set up to be flush with cap space. The only way they wouldn't be is if they acquire an All-Star caliber player with a big contract before then, and that would be done with the intention of convincing James to stay.
That's where the Cavaliers stand. That's not changing much. So let's move on to LeBron James.
We know the following things about LeBron James: He wants to win championships. He wants to be one of the greatest players of all-time. He wants to be a global icon and have a commercial portfolio akin to those of Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. He wants to be the Warren Buffet of the NBA. How does that all factor in to his decision-making process in 2010?

Beijing -- Surrounded by a crush of tape recorders, cameras and boom mics, LeBron James said he was open to the possibility of playing overseas if he decides to opt out of his contract with the Cavaliers after the 2009-10 season.
James, one of the faces of the "Redeem Team" composed of NBA superstars looking to erase the U.S.'s recent failures on the international stage, denied an ESPN report that he had spoken to overseas teams about a deal that could land him $50 million a year, but he didn't dismiss the possibility of packing his bags if the right offer came along.
"You never know," James said at Team USA's media briefing Friday before the Americans play Olympic host China in their first game of pool play Sunday.

And this is one of the many reasons why I cant stand to watch pro sports. All about the money and not the dedication to a city and its fans, who pay there salarys.

There used to be a time when the greats like Jordan(early years), Johnson, Bird, ect, would not think about leaving for another team and wearing another jersey. And would simply reply to a question about playing somewhere else as "My dedication is to the Cleveland fans and the city no where else".

I don't see these big names going overseas. First off the NBA and the players association would get heavily involved, for the good of the leauge. Next the endorsement deals for these guys would be effected majorily. Sure, there are oversea markets for endorsement revenue... but, it would kill their American marketability as they may be viewed as "traitors". And with many of the major companies that are involved in the NBA are American companies...Nike, Gatorade, Shick...etc. So, I think it's all hypothetical talk that hasn't been thought out.

It would be unthinkable for a top-level NBA star to leave and play in Europe. (But if anyone did, it's not hard to imagine it would be LeBron James.)
Just as it was unthinkable for an American Olympic team with NBA players to lose the gold. (Bronze in 2004.)
Just as it was unthinkable for an international player to be the NBA's Most Valuable Player (Dirk Nowitzki, 2007) or to be the NBA's top draft pick (Yao Ming, Andrew Bogut, Andrea Bargnani).

BEIJING: Heading into these Olympic Games, as American men's basketball began its great image overhaul, two questions lingered over the group that has become known as the Redeem Team.

The Cavaliers? megastar, fresh off helping the U.S. basketball team win gold at the Beijing Olympics, will be at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend for the debut of ?More Than A Game,? a documentary chronicling his rise to stardom and how he and four childhood friends overcame long odds to win a national championship in high school.
Combining footage taken during James? career at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in nearby Akron, along with one-on-one interviews by writer/director Kris Belman, home videos, and personal family photographs, the film is about much more than basketball. At its core is a story of friendship, loyalty and love.

In the spring of 2003, the ongoing spectacle of LeBron James and the St. Vincent-St. Mary boys basketball team had become not only one of the biggest sports stories in the nation, but also quite a soap opera.
That soap opera is about to play out on the silver screen.
Everyone wanted a piece of James ? for his amazing play on the court as a senior and for the swirling controversies and story lines that came with the uncharted territory.
Fans crammed every public appearance across the country. National media outlets camped out at the high school. Representatives from shoe companies moved into Akron-area hotels. Competing agents came offering loads of cash. Potential business partners angled for attention by sending gifts to

Lol, yeah that's the problem.. He's the only reason for their success. Not much of a TEAM. I admit he's a great player, just not someone to carry the name "Cleveland" on his chest as he roots for the hated Yankees.
