We hear frequently that sports is a ruthless merito cracy, that everything that moves is quantified, measured, and ranked. Style counts, but in the long run, sports are not about "how" but "how many."
We further hear that the appeal of sports is its immediacy. "What have you done for me lately?" says the disgruntled fan when the star player encounters a slight slump.
Yet when it comes to passing out the most important awards, these ideals are honored more in the breach than in the observance.
Take the Most Valuable Player award in the NBA, which LeBron James, in a perfect world, should do easily.

NEW ORLEANS: LeBron James gave a glowing new yellow basketball court made of 5,000 to 6,000 pairs of ground-up sneakers the ultimate christening Thursday.
The Cleveland Cavaliers star ran layup drills with youngsters. James dedicated a playground at the St. Bernard Recreation Center, a neighborhood about 15 minutes from downtown still rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina.
The project was paid for by State Farm Insurance and is the first developed by the
James Family Foundation, which has plans for others across the country.
But James looked more in his element when he went inside and hit the court, one of five refurbished by Nike in New Orleans. Seattle SuperSonics rookie Kevin Durant joined James in the layup line. Also participating in the event was Brandon Roy of the Portland Trail Blazers, Lisa Leslie of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, running back Deuce McAllister of the New Orleans Saints, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and James' mother, Gloria.

NEW ORLEANS In a proud city still restoring its unique beauty, the Eastern Conference repaired its own image.
Ray Allen scored 28 points, making three straight 3-pointers in the final 3:15, and LeBron James added 27 as the East, widely considered the NBA's weaker half, beat the Western Conference 134-128 in Sunday night's All-Star Game.
Last year, the West humiliated the East in a 153-132 rout in Las Vegas when Kobe Bryant and Co. rewrote the event's record books. However, this time led by Allen's 14 fourth-quarter points and a stunning dunk by James with 55 seconds left, the East salvaged some pride and can return to the season's second half with bragging rights.
James, who added nine assists and eight rebounds, was the MVP for the second time in three years. He also won the honor in 2006.

LeBron James is making a case to be named this season's Most Valuable Player as he was chosen the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for the second straight month.
In 14 games during February, James averaged 30.2 points on 49.8 percent shooting, 8.9 rebounds and 8.5 assists. In January, James led the Cavs to an 11-3 record by averaging 32.8 points, 9.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game.
James has won the award seven times over his career: twice this season, once in 2006-07, twice in 2005-06 and twice in 2004-05.
