Coach Phil Jackson has coached 11 teams from two different cities into the NBA Finals, but they all have one thing in common: the triangle offense.
With the Cavaliers taking a lot of heat about their stagnant offense preventing them from beating the Boston Celtics and advancing in the playoffs this season, it seems like a question worth asking:
Could the triangle offense work here?
"In Cleveland's situation, in my mind, the personnel would be ideal," Tex Winter said.
Contrary to popular opinion, Winter didn't invent the triangle - or triple-post - offense. He learned it while playing for Sam Barry at USC and perfected it during more than 60 years of coaching in college and as an assistant to Jackson in Chicago and Los Angeles.
Now a consultant to the Lakers, the 86-year-old Winter wanted to make it clear he was only answering a question. He didn't want it to appear he was analyzing or criticizing the Cavs.
But as the foremost authority on the triangle offense, he's the basketball version of the EF Hutton ad. When he talks, people listen.
