CLEVELAND: The Cavaliers have yet to make a free-agent signing this offseason.
The mortgage industry is suffering an unprecedented crisis with a credit crunch and skyrocketing foreclosure rates, directly affecting the bottom line of giants like Quicken Loans, the primary company of Cavs owner Dan Gilbert.
These two statements are facts, but they are not related. That's something that comes from Gilbert himself.
''There is zero connection between any current events in the mortgage markets with the strategy, tactics and payroll of the Cleveland Cavaliers,'' Gilbert said in an e-mail message Monday.

I thought the Cavs would be better than this during this offseason. They are a piece away from being a team that won't get swept in a Finals and possibly winning a Championship. If they stand pat they may never see the Finals again.

Was there really much out there that the Cavs could move on this offseason? Sure I would have loved to get a guy like KG, but the Cavs didn't have the pieces to offer to get him. I said from the beginning that I would be happy if they brought back the team they had and just add a player or two with the mid level. They will be able to resign Varejao and Pavlovic and still have the salary room to sign a player or two before the season starts. I look forward to seeing how their younger talent develops since last season. By the time the trading deadline comes around this season I would look for them to figure out their needs and try to make a move. By that time there will probably be some players that want off of their crappy teams. The only thing that does surprise me is that Cleveland doesn't seem to have as much pull with the FA's as I thought they would after making the Finals.

The Cavaliers are a month from starting camp, and their roster is virtually unchanged.
But do not think inaction means inactivity.
The team studied the possible ways to improve in the offseason and, for good reason, did not make a major move. Breathe easy; the sky is not falling.
This is a good team, one that went to the NBA Finals and finished with the second-best record in the Eastern Conference. There was no sense throwing good money after bad in a market of free agents who did not include clear upgrades, and there was no sense bringing in a guy who might stifle the development of Daniel Gibson.

When LeBron James bitterly walked away from the final game of the Cavaliers' season in June, he did it with a firm promise that he would spend this summer devoted to improving his game.
How that would be possible was unclear.
James needed rest after the longest season of his career. His personal life included the birth of his second son, Bryce Maximus, and a commitment to host the ESPY Awards and a Saturday Night Live episode. In addition, he committed to play for Team USA in the FIBA Americas Championship.
Results on the court in that tournament in Las Vegas in the past two weeks have shown James is backing up the talk. In the past two months, he has been working diligently on improving his jumper with Cavs assistant coach Chris Jent. It's showing, as he has helped the Americans thrash the competition on Team USA's way to securing a berth in next summer's Olympics.

Guard/forward Alan Anderson worked out for the Cavaliers on Thursday at their new practice facility in Independence, according to league sources.
Anderson, 6-6 and 220 pounds, played two seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats. He averaged 5.8 points and 1.9 rebounds in 53 career games with the Bobcats.
League sources said several players have worked out for the Cavs and the team plans visits from several more before the start of training camp on Oct. 2. One player expected to visit is Allan Houston.
