CLEVELAND - LeBron James' paycheck is now set, and it's big.
The NBA finalized its salary cap for the 2007-08 season on Tuesday, upping it about $2 million from last year to $55.63 million.
Last summer, James signed a three-year maximum contract extension, which now kicks in with the start of the new NBA fiscal year. The value of the deal was not certain until the league set the new cap.
The numbers show James will earn about $43 million in the next three years, starting with a salary of about $13 million this season with annual raises of about $1.4 million each year.
James has an option for the 2010-11 season that is worth roughly $17 million.

Moves raise chance
of signing Varejao
The likelihood of free agent forward Anderson Varejao returning to the Cavaliers increased dramatically with several events around the NBA on Wednesday.
The Orlando Magic got Rashard Lewis for six years and $110 million in a sign-and-trade deal with the Seattle SuperSonics. But the Magic were unable to create enough salary-cap space to keep promising big man Darko Milicic and renounced his rights to complete the deal. Several media outlets then reported that Milicic quickly reached a long-term deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Hopefully they can get Varejao to sign to something similar to what Gooden got, although I would like to see it be a longer deal than 3 years. It's good nobody has the type of money to spend as the earlier rumors stated. Worst case senario is that Varejao gets [censored]ed off and takes the one year deal to be a FA next year, but it seems like he would be dumb to turn down 18-24 million for 3-4 years hoping to cash in next year.

The Cavaliers' pursuit of a point guard has heated up again.
According to multiple league executives, the Cavs and Sacramento Kings have restarted talks to bring Mike Bibby to Cleveland. The two teams nearly completed a deal shortly before February's trading deadline and have been in discussions again over the past several days.
A version of the deal was close to happening Thursday, sources said, in a three-way move with the San Antonio Spurs.
The Cavs were believed to be after the rights to Argentine center Luis Scola as well, which the Spurs own. When the talks broke down, the Spurs dealt Scola and reserve forward Jackie Butler to the Houston Rockets.

? Here's how to view Varejao -- he's a super sub as a big man. A key to the Cavs' success has been having four big men who do different things. Zydrunas Ilgauskas can score and block some shots. Drew Gooden is the most athletic of the big men in terms of rebounding, shooting and inside scoring. Donyell Marshall's shooting fell off, but the Cavs still like him as a part-time player. Varejao draws charges, rebounds, brings energy and is learning how to score inside.

Shannon Brown, not Daniel "Boobie" Gibson, spent his rookie year on the bench this past season. It was Brown, not Gibson, who was the Cavaliers' No. 1 pick in the 2006 NBA Draft.
It was 2006 second-round pick Gibson, not Brown, who was the star in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals to lead the Cavs to the first NBA Finals in franchise history.
Brown insists he had nothing to prove during the Las Vegas Summer League that ended for the Cavs on Saturday night. But it was Brown, not Gibson, who was leading the Cavs' summer league team in scoring at 18 points per game before Saturday.
