With only a quarter of the season completed, it may be a little early to start looking at end-of-the-season awards.
But it's certainly not too early to start making people sit up and take notice.
That's what the Cavaliers are doing defensively as a team, and what LeBron James is doing defensively as an individual. He may have more blocked shots among ESPN's "Top 10 Plays" this season than slams.
It is not entirely coincidental that James needs just one steal to break Mark Price's record and become the team's all-time leader in that category. The way the Cavs are playing defensively this season is giving him more freedom to gamble, and he's taking full advantage.
Though clearly known more for his offensive exploits, James has been working hard to improve his defense the past few seasons and has often volunteered to guard the opponent's best player -- like Indiana's Danny Granger.
Granger came into The Q last Friday averaging more than 24 points per game. He scored four against James. In fact, in his past three games, James has held the opponents' starting small forward (New York's Wilson Chandler, Granger and Charlotte's Gerald Wallace) to a total of 17 points and 25.9 percent shooting (7 of 27). Granger and Wallace recorded their season lows.

Setting records never entered the mind of Zydrunas Ilgauskas a decade ago. The 7-foot-3 center just hoped to be healthy enough to prove himself as an NBA player.

Ilgauskas has gone on to do that and much more.

He takes the floor tonight poised to become the franchise?s career leader in rebounds. He needs four to pass Brad Daugherty when the Cavs (17-3) meet the Raptors (8-11) in a 7 p.m. game at Quicken Loans Arena.

?It?s going to mean a lot,? Ilgauskas said. ?Obviously, it?s not something that happens every day and for most players, it doesn?t happen at all. ... When it comes, you have to enjoy it because it?s been a lot of years, a lot of hard work ... a lot of frustration.?

After missing essentially four seasons within his first five years in the league, Ilgauskas has become a two-time All-Star. And this season, he has helped the Cavs to their best start ever, as they take an eight-game winning streak into tonight.

The guy who has played with Ilgauskas the longest couldn?t be happier for his big man.

?Knowing the history of what he?s gone through, the injuries and with the losing season after losing season early in his career,? All-Star LeBron James said, ?to be able to accomplish this in one of the best years he?s had as a professional athlete, it?s going to be great.?

James, too, could set a franchise record tonight. He needs one steal to pass Mark Price on that career list. But James hopes that happens another night.

He wants this night to belong to Ilgauskas, the only remaining player from when James arrived in 2003.

?He means a lot to me, honestly,? James said last week. ?When you go through the adversity like he went through, you can always look to a guy like that.?

Six years in a row of playing in 73 or more games. Not so much this article, but most outsiders refer to Z as injury prone, which is bs. It's been 8 years since he missed significant time. He's been a great team player in his years here so it's nice to see him break the team record.

Another thing. I seems that Jackson is getting the minutes that Hickson was getting, not sure why. Boobie hurt his toe and didn't come back. That showed (as much as it can in a blowout win) that the Cavs are thin at guard. If Ferry makes a move I'd prefer a bigger 2 guard that would make them 4 deep with quality guards.
2 quick baskets by Hickson, really don't know why he hasn't been the 4th big.

I think it's because Darnell is less prone to mistakes on the defensive end and is a bigger body that can guard some of the bigger players(like O'Neal tonight), where as Hickson is a little too skinny right now to guard Centers, even if only temporarily.

Neither, if used in the regular rotation, would be brought in for offense at this point of their careers.

The Cavs are 1 bad quarter away from winning 17 in a row. Ironically that quarter was about the last time the Pistons played well.

Very fun to watch...I think later in the season with a bigger lead like this Brown should let LBJ get a couple more minutes, just so that his legs are used to a longer game...

Not sure on the Jackson/Hickson thing...I really like both of them...Glad that wright is no longer seeing minutes..Jackson played 4 years in college so he is a little more seasoned than Hickson, who still has lots to learn, but I would love to see Hickson get more time and learn on the go as he has a ton of potential...

I just want to also say that this team is dominating teams because when the first team goes to the bench, the second team is putting it on teams...

Andy is playing like an all-star, Wally, Boobie and whoever stays in at the point are shooting the ball very well...

LBJ is the best player in the league tho...I truly believe that he could be averaging 30+ pts in these games if he was playing full games...He had 31 tonight and didn't play the fourth quarter...He hasn't played in the 4th quarter in 6 out of the last 8 games...he is good for about 10 pts in the fourth usually so that would be 60 more points to his total...His defense is great, and he has the ability to take over a game when it is close...
