Buckeye Sticker Where do Browns go for a QB?

This much we know: Cleveland's new general manager Phil Savage will prioritize re-signing veteran Kelly Holcomb, who's about to become a free agent. But the Browns know they can't count on Holcomb holding up to the rigors of a 16-game season, so they'll also pursue a veteran backup who has even more starting experience than their would-be starter.

What the Browns really want is to land a Trent Dilfer-type of veteran. Somebody who knows his role and won't make any noise about wanting a chance to start ahead of Holcomb. The last thing Cleveland wants is indecision at the position, like the kind it had in 2002-2003, when Holcomb and Tim Couch were flip-flopping in and out of the No. 1 job.

Cleveland's wish list includes Minnesota's Gus Frerotte, who's headed for free agency and may want to pursue a possible starting job, New England's Jim Miller, Miami's Jay Fiedler andBaltimore's Kordell Stewart. What about the Giants' Kurt Warner? He conceivably could enter into the picture in Cleveland, but he clearly wants a starting opportunity and the Browns wouldn't offer him anything better than what he already has in New York as Eli Manning's backup.

With Holcomb and a compliant veteran aboard, the Browns could then avoid the idea of having to spend their No. 3 pick on one of the draft's two top quarterbacks -- Utah's Alex Smith or Cal's Aaron Rodgers. Cleveland took Louisiana Tech's Luke McCown in the fourth round last year, but he's not thought to be anywhere near ready contend for the No. 1 job. In the eyes of most within the organization, McCown looked worse the more he played last season. He enters 2005 looking locked in at the No. 3 position.
This is the main issue regarding the Brown's and the upcoming draft. I think they are going to pull the trigger on a QB. Just a hunch.
