Off Topic: What would you do as the SF Niners GM?
Yes, I understand that Tom Donahoe (GM) has forgotten more about football than I will ever know....but I have thought about this pick and I simply don't get it. And this is not the only pick I question, there are many that seem to be products of pride rather than of strategy or even need.
Firstly, SF probably understands they are not going to the playoffs next year. Hell, they have a good chance of being just as bad. Understanding that, they should be targeting the next TWO years of draft choices. Having said that, this is what I would have looked at:
Trade down with (insert appropriate team) to get their round 1 pick next year and the number 10 pick overall this year....assuming this is possible. Then, draft Mike Williams this year and sign Shaun Alexander or Travis Henry. Then next year, take a shot at Matt Leinart. If you don't have the number #1 pick next year, you'll have at least two picks to trade for it. I know this does not address defensive concerns but Special Consultant Walsh does not care....he just wants a QB but I don't think Alex Smith is the answer.
Also, I look at Miami, Chicago and TB...they drafted running backs when there are a few young free agents available and they could have traded down to get Antrel Rolle or Carlos Rogers or Demarcus Ware.
The draft is such a crapshoot, I would gladly parlay my higher picks for next years picks to teams that want to gamble. I would even have traded way down for Jason Campbell....I thought he showed tremendous improvement.

What would be the point of fans buying season tickets for next year if the GM comes out and says, "I know we're going to suck this year so we're going to try to get as many draft picks as we can for next year and play bad enough that we get the first pick in the draft again."

I think that's part of my point. I don't see Alex Smith improving the quality of play enough to impact their record. Of course, the GM can't say that. But I think the average NFL fan understands that he can't make the difference in a single year either. Or maybe I am crediting the average NFL fan too much .

Tom Donahoe is the GM for the Bills. But if I were the 49ers GM (does HC Nolan have both jobs?) my first order of business this week would obviously be signing Alex Smith and my other picks.
