Alan, any sense as to whether the Browns could void his contract basded on this and get rid of him?

I think the "terms are undisclosed"
Quote:
According to terms of Winslow's contract, he was scheduled to receive an option bonus of $4.4 million in March. He also was scheduled to be paid a $2 million installment of his $6 million signing bonus before the start of the 2005 season. His base salary was to be $305,000.
Bonsiewicz declined to say if Winslow's contract contained provisions to protect the club in case of a non-football injury.

i'm no legal eagle, but some are saying that his $4.4 mill bonus for 2005 will probably be taken back.....the browns may also go after his initial signing bonus as well....
supposedly someone on Cowherd today said Winslow could stand to lose $10 million because of this....
they were talking on a browns board about how the soldja scored a 9 or 12 on the wonderlic....
edit: akak was posting while i was typing....he beat me to it.....the numbers 4.4 mill and the 6 mill do seem to verify he is out 10.4 mill...

But the 10 mill could also refer to some "one time escalators" in his contract for bonuses and salary... but Its my understanding that he's already missed those escalators based on being out last year (they were one time, and performance based)... but that's also a little unclear. So that could still be inplay if he doesn't play this year.
The scheduled bonuses would only be reimbursed if there is a non football injury clause... I would think...

Hopefully, the browns and him get into a big spat over all that bonus money and his dumb-ass gets shipped off for a second rounder or something.

Correct, but you can rest assured that the player's union will do anything in their power to make sure he gets his money.

Well of course... I mean he's got the clause or he doesn't... if they can trade Gerard Warren for a 4... they can trade this kid for a 4... the other team will have to pay him though...
I tend to think that all this talk about voiding bonuses... if true... would need to be very specific in the contract (Like, "The Browns may withold your signing bonus if you miss all or part of a season because you: fall off your motorcycle, tear your ACL Skiing, or you bungee jump and it breaks, or Drive Larry Nance's Dragster). Otherwise, if its just a general non football injury clause, then the Browns could just void the whole thing... but he'd be a UFA.
So... it comes down to how clear things are in the contract, I'm sure there is something in there, but as to how specific it is remains to be seen.
