I think the worst thing that could've happened to Clarett was that he got drafted in the 3rd Round.
The only way Clarett would shape up was as a 5th, 6th, 7th Round Selection or as a Free Agent in mini-camp working to make the team. Its the only thing that would've forced him to mature, get his life straightened out, & abandon the sense of entitlement that led to his downfall.
And now? The Broncos enabled the kid the way a drug dealer would enable a crack addict. You gave the kid a (probable) million dollar deal over the life of the contract, and basically guaranteed him a roster spot. Lets face it: even if he doesn't make the team this season, no team is flat-out cutting a 3rd Round Draft Pick. They'll send him to NFL Europe, coddle him some more, and only intensify his sense of entitlement.
He could've been a steal if the teams allowed him to drop into the latter rounds & they'd get a very hungry player in mini-camp. And now? They got a kid with no motivation to excel whatsoever with a million bucks in his pocket. What a shame.

Wow, haven't even seen him practice yet and already labelling him as having no motivation? I think his motivation will be to prove he belongs in the NFL and was a steal in the third round, not to make more money down the road. MoC is very hungry now. He hasn't played in 2 years and now must prove that that hasn't taken its toll on him. I guess we will all see come next season. Trust me, we haven't heard the last of Maurice. I am just glad he didn't get picked by a local team like the Browns or Bengals. We would still hear about him daily in that case.

It doesn't matter if I've seen him practice. He's a TB who ran a 4.8 at the Combine. You really think he can make the team at that speed?
"MoC is very hungry now."
Where do you come to this conclusion? Shouldn't he have been hungry to play football as a Sophomore? As a Junior? To show up in shape at his first Combine?
I don't think its reasonable for anybody to draw positive conclusions about this kid's mental state at this point. Right now, its Guilty until proven Innocent.

Emmitt Smith ran a 4.7 at his combine.... he made the team. I think he set a few records too. People put too much stock in 40 speed. Watch a track meet or a drag race sometime and watch a guy that runs one tenth of a second faster than the next guy. It looks like a tie. He has got great vision and he can break tackles because he is very strong. I think the only thing that will hamper him is if he continues to get injured every year.

I would love to see that too.... I am not holding my breath though.

gost8: "Emmitt Smith ran a 4.7 at his combine.... he made the team. He set a few records too, I think."
For every Emmitt Smith who ran a 4.7 at the combine, I can give you 1,000,000 other 4.7 guys who didn't make the NFL. By that same rationale, that makes Clarett's chances a million to one.
Emmitt Smith was one guy. A special football player. Not every one is Emmitt Smith. In fact, 'everyone' is more likely to be someone less talented who doesn't cut it in the Pros.

Priest Holmes also ran a 4.7 and went undrafted. For the rest of your million man example I can match another [censored]load of guys that ran 4.4's and 4.5's, and didn't make it. As much as I hate what he's done to tOSU, I can't ignore the fact that he had great field vision, probably still does. He's got power, vision, and balance. In case you don't remember him bitching early on in his freshman year about the team not practicing hard enough. Not having enough intensity in practices. Mo will work hard. He was out of shape the first time, but that was probably due to his court and NCAA involvement cutting into training more than anything else.
I will root against Mo until he shows that he's not a complete and total jackass. But to say the guy is terrible , because he [censored]ed you over, is a revisionist way of looking at things.

If you are giving million to one odds on whether he makes the team this year, I'll take that bet. Depending on who you ask MoC is down in the mid 4.6 range now. Not that it means he's a better back.
For every 4.7 guy that doesn't make it in the NFL, I can give you a 4.5 guy that doesn't make it either. Come on, we are talk two tenths of a second here.... at the RB position to boot. WR or DB I can almost see debating over a 40 time. I just think it is ridiculous to scout a guy for two years and when he gets to the combine... he runs a 4.72 instead of a 4.5, everyone says he has lost stock. I can't ever remember thinking to myself, "Damn it, if that guy was two tenths of a second faster he would have scored."
Listen, Sloopy. I am not saying Maurice is going to do great and I am not saying he is going to be a washup either. My point is simply this.... If you want to question Maurice's work ethic ask any of his former teammates. He is a stud in the gym. Maurice's greatest asset has never been break away speed. Not many RBs in the NFL are the fastest guy on the team and there is always a DB on the opposing defense that can catch you. If MoC can hit the hole and break some tackles he will be just fine. Just so happens those are his strongest assets.

IronBuckI & gost8: "Priest Holmes also ran a 4.7 and went undrafted."
Okay, Mo's chances have been upgraded to 500,000 to 1.
"I can match another [censored]load of guys that ran 4.4's and 4.5's, and didn't make it."
So you're telling me there's no diff between a 4.4 TB and a 4.8 TB? Why do they run at the combines then?
Regardless, my point remains: YOUR CHANCES OF MAKING THE NFL ARE GREATER IF YOU RUN A 4.4 AS OPPOSED TO A 4.8. Period.
"I can't ever remember thinking to myself, "Damn it, if that guy was two tenths of a second faster he would have scored."
There's more to football than touchdowns. The hole on the OL closes within tenths of a second. You avoid 4.5 Linebackers by tenths of a second. The difference between a 4.8 and a 4.5 might be a loss or a 5 yard gain.
"But to say the guy is terrible , because he [censored]ed you over, is a revisionist way of looking at things."
a.) I never said Maurice was terrible
b.) He never f***ed me over. He won me a National Championship, what more can I ask for?
In fact, I think because of all of his transgressions, people have forgotten how great a RB he WAS. I emphasize was because he hasn't played football in 2 years. I thought he looked faster than a 4.8 in '02, but I don't know what shape he's been in, or what he's done to his body in the 2 years since. All I know is, RIGHT NOW he runs a 4.8.
