It is news, because these are first reports of an investigation into L'Affaire Bush. These are not reports of the NCAA investigation per se, they are the results of investigations by Yahoo Sports. So who knows how this will play out. Yahoo Sports though is gathering a group of articles, so perhaps what we really have here is one of those unending media storms, targeting a single football team. Only this time it is USC, not tOSU, Reggie Bush, not MoC. More importantly, these allegations do seem to have some teeth - which was something that with time became signficantly lacking in a lot of Tom Friend's diatribes against the Buckeyes. Still, the parallels cannot be ignored and this is strictly a buyer beware atmosphere as far as I am concerned. How much is propelled by Yahoo Sports need to elevate its status, how much by truly new information?
With that in mind let us just settle and agree on this. Pretty much everything substantial in the Yahoo Sports articles are, on careful reading, old wine in new bottles. There is the Deep Throat figure of DeMartino and his allegations, which do consitute new information. For the most part though, no, the material is recycled.
It is also worth reminding ourselves of what some of these rules and rumors and reports mean.
For Bush - he has the most at stake, but much of what he might lose would be intangible:
retroactively ineligible for collegiate play from time of first benefit ..
Heisman Trophy slides down to number two in the voting ..
For USC
If there is a clear enough tie that the NCAA declares they should have known and had control -- sanctions, level unknown.
Depending on the precise timeline possibly taking some victories off the books. If the first rumored benefit is as reported October 2004, then this imapcts a storied pair of seasons. Perhaps even the mythical National Title and their BCS title game victory. Nothing could be messier for USC or for college football as a whole.
Who Are The Real Villains:
Wannabe Agents, plain and simple, be they qualified or delusional.
