The Browns waived QB Doug Johnson this afternoon, releasing the five-year veteran several months after he was signed to be the back-up quarterback to Trent Dilfer.

The Browns announced today that they have waived QB Doug Johnson and have acquired QB Derek Anderson off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens.

Johnson was signed this summer after it became clear that Josh Harris was not likely to be able to fill the backup quarterback role for the Browns. Prior to his stint with the Browns, Johnson had played quarterback with the Atlanta Falcons and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The five-year veteran from Florida was considered to be the team's best option to back up Trent Dilfer as the pre-season began, but lost his job to rookie Charlie Frye during the exhibition season, and did not even appear in the Browns final pre-season game against Chicago.

Derek Anderson is a rookie who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2005 NFL draft. While at Oregon State, Anderson served as the Beavers' starting quarterback for three straight years, leading them to three consecutive post-season Bowl appearances. Overall, Anderson was 768-of-1,515 passing for 11,249 yards and 79 touchdowns while at Oregon State.

I always thought Anderson seemed like a real good prospect. Looks like the Browns are going to try to groom 2 guys.
