Henry arrested

The Bengals’ break-out season hit its first off-field speed bump Thursday when rookie wide receiver Chris Henry was arrested for possession of marijuana.
The Bengals said the club and the NFL won’t consider action until, “the legal process has run its course.” That, and past cases indicate Henry would be in uniform when the Bengals play in Detroit Sunday.
Henry, about to become the NFL’s leading rookie receiver, was stopped for speeding at 316 Philadelphia St. in Covington, Ky., at 12:46 a.m. Thursday. According to Covington police, when officers smelled marijuana Henry agreed to a search and they found two baggies of the drug in Henry’s shoes.
A police spokesman said Thursday night the charge is a misdemeanor and is punishable up to six months in jail. Typically, the accused has to appear in court in the next two to three weeks. Published reports say Henry is to appear in Kenton District Court 9:30 a.m. Friday and then Dec. 28 for four traffic charges topped by speeding.
Henry, a Rookie of the Year candidate, is a third-round pick out of West Virginia who is one of the starters in the Bengals’ three wide-receiver sets and is their third-leading wide receiver with 30 catches for 395 yards and five touchdowns. Among rookies, he trails only sidelined Browns receiver Braylon Edwards’ 32 catches and 512 yards.
According to league policy, the arrest puts Henry into a treatment plan that can’t exceed 90 days, but can be revised up to six months. If player is charged with criminal activity, he’s required to attend clinical evaluation. Failure to comply with the treatment plan or clinical evaluation can result in a fine or suspension.
A conviction or any admission of guilt can result in a fine, suspension, or banishment from the NFL as called by the commissioner, according to the NFL policy. Henry, 22, practiced Thursday.
