His overall win % numbers should carry the day for the guy.

People want to give Irvin slack for being #2 to Rice in his day, then give Madden a break for being #2 to the Steeler dynasty of the 70's.

Since I go every year, my take:

Aikman: Not sure he deserved to be a first ballot guy, but this one was so obvious it was laughable. NFL network ran a special on the Cowboys Super Bowl teams right before the press conference, so this was a no-brainer. If Young was first ballot, then I guess Aikman is OK too.

Carson: Was delighted to see him get in...he was almost every bit the player LT was, but played in his shadow despite probably being a more consistent player. Definiteyl deserving, and I'm glad one of the perpetual finalists (Dent, Monk, Keuchenberg, Greenwood) finally got his due.

Reggie White: Obvious, no comment needed.

Madden: Not surprised, given his visibility in the game. This is probably the lesson case for the fact that the rest of the lives of the nominees lives matter. He was never deemed worthy as a coach when he was eligible before, but with his legend in announcing and his expanding the visibility of the league, he deserves to be in as a Vet guy, who get grand consideration anyway.

Wright: Don't remember much about this guy, but if it's good enough for the Vets, it's good enough for me.

Moon: I'm sorta shocked by this one, but considering the number of years he played and his visibilty as a trailblazer of successful black QBs, it makes sense. He also threw for a million yards, including all those in the CFL. There is a huge glut of QBs, and I guess the only reason I'm surprised is that unlike Young and Kelly and some of the others, he never made a Super Bowl.

Other comments:

-Monk not getting in is again a disappointment. With him not even making the first cut of finalists, it appears he has no chance until he is a Veterans committee guy, which is a shame.

-That said, I'm glad Swervin' Irvin didn't get in before Monk. Other than push off and having an affinity for crack whores, I don't see much that sets Irvin apart from several other receivers, in all honesty.

-LC Greenwood is a victim of his own team. There are 10 70's Steelers in, and I don't think the voters want to add any more.

-I think Derrick Thomas should have gotten in, and probably will still. Maybe they wanted to do only 1 posthumous induction at a time...I don't know.

-Don't be surprised if Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed go in together. Reed before Monk? Interesting, debatable, but very probable.

I think this win tonight just ensured Cowher a spot when he hangs it up unless he just totally goes in the tank for a significant period of time.

I might be off but thats 14 years, 10 playoffs, 6 AFC champ games, 2 SB and 1 SB win. I don't know his exact win % but I do know he's averaged 10 wins a year for the 14 so its gotta be .750ish.

Thoughts?

Not many coaches in the HOF right now, and there's a bunch in the modern Cowher era (Belliceck, Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, Shanahan) who have won close to as many games and multiple Super Bowls that may get looks at it first. It's hard to tell with coaches, because it seems like the voters are leary of letting them in, though George Allen and John Madden are now starting to buck that trend, so more may follow suit.
