Chiefs 27, Bengals 20: No reason to panic?
Lewis keeps stiff upper lip despite discouraging loss

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Chiefs running back Larry Johnson breaks away from Bengals linebacker Anthony Schlegel for 15 of his 119 rushing yards.

Ed Zurga Associated Press
Coach Marvin Lewis liked what he saw in the second half, although the Bengals never threatened to take the lead.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Marvin Lewis sounded more like the coach of an expansion team than of one with Super Bowl aspirations.
The Cincinnati Bengals had just lost 27-20 to the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday and Lewis was reduced to complimenting his team for progress.
This wasn't like the previous two losses in what is now a four-game losing streak. Losing in Seattle is no disgrace, nor is losing to unbeaten New England.
But the Chiefs? This was a team that hadn't scored in the first quarter, has a journeyman quarterback and whose running game gained 10 yards last week.

Jones is benched after Chiefs sack Palmer three times

Monday, October 15, 2007 3:28 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Levi Jones wondered at the start of the season why he wasn't starting. Yesterday, the Cincinnati Bengals left tackle had no quibble when he was yanked.
On three consecutive series in Cincinnati's 27-20 loss to Kansas City, Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen beat Jones for sacks of Carson Palmer. After that, left guard Andrew Whitworth replaced Jones and Scott Kooistra took over at guard.

This 'Team' absolutely doesn't deserve to be complimented for anything.

Here, let me help you compose a suitable post-game speech, Marvin: "Hey, way to lose again guys. You suck!" (exit room) There, that doesn't seem so hard, does it?

Well, on the plus side Justin "franchise" Smith got his first sack of the season. Took him until game 5, now that's living up to the tag. He's on pace to have 5 for the season.

The "team" label seems inappropriate for this bunch. So coach Lewis says they're finally playing that way instead of just a bunch of individuals. Well great, it only took four years. Nice work, coach. There's no "i" in "team", but there's definitely an "i" in "quit". I guess we'll find out in the next few weeks if the coach is on to something or if it was just a mirage.

Season ends for Bengals' Perry, Kilmer

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 3:39 AM

From staff and wire reports
The Cincinnati Bengals held out hope that receiver Tab Perry and safety Ethan Kilmer could return this season. Yesterday, their patience wore out and the team placed both on injured reserve.

Perry, a solid kickoff returner, was expected to also hold down the No. 3 receiver position until Chris Henry returned from his eight-game suspension. But Perry struggled to establish chemistry with quarterback Carson Palmer and was injured in the Bengals' second game.

Receiver isn't happy with his play despite record-setting pace
Thursday, October 18, 2007 3:42 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
David KohlAssociated Press
Bengals receiver Chad Johnson is on pace to break Jerry Rice's record for receiving yards in a season. Rice set the standard with 1,848 yards in 1995.

CINCINNATI -- Chad Johnson is on pace to set the NFL season record for receiving yards.

Given his flamboyant persona, an observer might guess he would use a glowing adjective to describe his performance. The word he used might surprise you.
"I'm playing horrible right now," the Bengals receiver said.

Notebook: Surgery won't end receiver's career

Thursday, October 18, 2007 3:41 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Tab Perry had surgery Tuesday on the injured hip that has cut short his past two seasons, but Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said doctors expect the receiver to be able to resume his career.
During training camp, Perry said his hip had healed.
"I think internally, he was having more problems than he let on to us," Lewis said. "He spoke to someone else and they said, 'Why don't we try this now and maybe we can fix you for good?' I think he chose to take that route because he was having some discomfort. If it all goes well, then Tab should come back and be able to play NFL football."
