Bengals notebook: Aggressive approach lauded
Tuesday, December 11, 2007 2:59 AM
By Bill Rabinowitz
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
CINCINNATI -- Coach Marvin Lewis attributed the comments to the glow of a victorious postgame locker room.
But what Rudi Johnson and Dexter Jackson said Sunday after the Cincinnati Bengals beat the St. Louis Rams 19-10 was telling.
After the Bengals ran the ball down the Rams' throats on their final drive, Lewis said in his postgame news conference that Cincinnati had gotten back to running "Rudi-style" runs on that possession.

Tackle vows to return for his 13th season

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
CINCINNATI -- Right tackle Willie Anderson knows Bengals coach Marvin Lewis considers it verboten to reveal specifics about injuries.
But when Anderson heard his 10-year-old son ask about Internet rumors predicting the end of his career, he decided it was time to set the record straight, even if it might draw the coach's wrath.
"My son asked me, 'Are you retiring?' " Anderson said yesterday. "He reads Web sites and fan comments."

Bengals: Key for 'D' is growth
Younger defenders learn lessons well in midst of otherwise lost season

The Bengals' Domata Peko, left, sacking the Rams' Brock Berlin, has shown improvement in his second NFL season.
CINCINNATI -- Bengals defensive tackle Domata Peko believes he can become a Pro Bowl player, an anchor of the line. His goal for this season, his second in the NFL, was more modest.
"I just wanted to be better than last year," he said. "The coaches have told me I've been doing good, so I'm just trying to keep it up."

Houshmandzadeh finds some solace in Pro Bowl spot
Thursday, December 20, 2007 3:22 AM
By Scott Priestle
The Columbus Dispatch
CINCINNATI -- Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has had his most productive, most decorated season in what has been perhaps the most frustrating season of his career. For that reason, he compared his recent Pro Bowl invitation with playing in a consolation game.
The Cleveland Browns remain alive in the championship bracket, and they have a chance to clinch a playoff spot Sunday against the Bengals.
"I'm kind of jealous," Houshmandzadeh said. "They're in the position I want to be in."

Bengals: Palmer's struggles this season aren't all of his making
Friday, December 21, 2007 3:11 AM
By Scott Priestle
The Columbus Dispatch
CINCINNATI -- Chad Johnson ran 10 yards to an open spot between two defenders, turned and looked for the ball. Carson Palmer threw a spiral that would have been a perfect pass if Johnson had cut toward the sideline. Instead, the ball skidded across the turf.
With that incomplete pass Saturday, another Bengals drive stalled, and a season's worth of aggravation was captured in five seconds: The star quarterback and star receiver interpreted the defense differently, so it did not matter that the pass was pretty or the route razor-sharp. All that mattered was that the offense settled for a field goal when it needed a touchdown.
