They had major needs in the front seven and at WR and addressed them adequately. I will give them the benefit of the doubt on Simpson in the 2nd, although I was a little bummed that they left Sweed on the board.
Overall I like the draft and have the same concern about Shirley. Thankfully when they lost out on Ellis and Harvey they did not panic and reach for a DE, instead they went with the best player on the board. I think that Rivers could be a hell of a leader on and off the feild in the next few years. I think they had Simpson ranked higher than the guys they left for whatever reasons. I think Malcolm Kelly hurt himself with some of his attitude, I think allot of teams passed on him for the same reason. I wonder with Sweed if there was something there that teams were looking away from him, because the Bengals were not the only team to leave him on the board. Based on his intanagbles I really don't think Simpson would have been there with the Bengals next pick, and I think that is why he was taken where he was.

Like I said I think they really addressed some needs here, just wish they would not have thrown away the last pick.

Operative word being, 'if'....but I agree. Could be the steal of the draft. He has all the intangibles, if he wants it.

I hope you are right.....In all reality I guess even if something happens from any of the draft pics it's just another scar on the team's morality..I'm not being sarcastic either by saying that. Hopefully he turns out to be a steal.

My 2 cents...

Keith Rivers: definitely best pick available for the Bengals.. will be more of a difference maker than Harvey especially considering the Odom pickup.
Jerome Simpson: I know I know everyone is frustrated (including me) when they don't know much about a guy when he's picked, but Simpson is a freak and has good character.. he can make all of the catches. The knock on him (aside from competition) was speed, but that was put to rest when he posted a 4.47 at the combine.. fans' boards are always different from the staff's, hence Sweed and company falling, and I do not want a 5-9 160 something Jackson in the 2nd round.. WR is a desparate need for this year's team, there is no depth.
Pat Sims: great value and need pick, great potential, and everyone got their DT.. there were character concerns because he left the team for a while but it was due to the death of a family member.
Andre Caldwell: great value pick and again fits a dire need.. very solid pick
Anthony Collins: great value pick again and addresses another need.. couldn't believe he was still on the board.

Loved the first 5 picks...

Jason Shirley: don't really get this pick... yes it addresses a need but brings a ton of baggage (even though they claim they've "researched" it) and has not proven anything on the field.. but his physical skills are noteworthy
Corey Lynch: should be a great special teams player with the ability to add depth at safety, can't really complain about this pick.
Matt Sherry: pass catching TE, ho hum, he's small.. they're trying a new school of thought, drafting a light passing threat and beef him up into a blocker, we'll see.
Angelo Craig: like this pick in 7th, he was definitely on people's boards as a pass rusher, got moved around from DE to OLB in high school (Glenville product I think?).. could be a pass rushing threat, running poorly at the combine could have hurt him.
Mario Urrutia: haha whatever... he's big? don't see him making the roster really, but he did have a great junior year so that's something...

I really liked this draft compared to others in recent years.. IMO LB, DT, OL, and WR really needed to be addressed and all were with good talent.. the Bengals finally looked like they were addressing need rather than taking the "best player available".. but I don't think they did it at value's expense.. would have liked to see another OL though...

He is one of the steals of the draft...6'6 - 235 lbs.

He dominated several games last year. Obviously slid coming off a big year previously, but several other Louisville players did as well. New coaching, bad results.

Kid will be special in the league, IMO. Great 7th round selection.

isn't this the kid who got three 15 yard penalties called on him in the span of 5 minutes in the Syracuse game last year? (Personal foul, offensive pass interference, face mask)

That's him. His own fans booed him regularly. Ass-clown extraordinaire.
