i'm still not sold on mendenhall, but agree that he was the best available at 23. i'm very excited about sweed, he is a big kid who adds some serious talent to a already good group of wr's. that being said, as everyone else has said, we need linemen badly. i was really hoping that otah was going to fall to us.

tomlin's interview as good, he is a classy guy and says the right things. it was pretty funny when berman said "steelers scoring in the 40's?" and tomlin just said "why not"

I was surprised mendenhall was there at 23. With who was left, that was an excellent pick. I was also surprised Sweed made it to Steelers in 2nd round. Lots of mocks had him going in the 1st. Big Ben gets his big WR. 3rd round pick was OLB Bruce Davis. I picked him for the Steelers in the 5th round, so I like the pick!

I like the Bruce Davis pick but the Dennis Dixon selection is a little puzzling. I suppose it's good we have a QB of the future considering Ben will be lucky to make it through the season alive with the swiss cheese O-line they have assembled for him.

They probably talked to him before drafting him, as they had numerous opportunities to do so. Whatever purpose they want him to fill, I'm sure he said he is willing to do.

Dixon was suprising but when you think about it, for a 6th rounder he's huge reward at nearly zero risk. Best case is you have a future franchise caliber QB who gets plenty of time to break in slowly, worst case is you cut a 6th rounder in a year or two.

To me this whole draft was pure BPA and I think over the long haul thats better than reaching to fill a need. They picked up 2 players they had rated in the top 25 availible, the Steelers also have a pretty decent track record of evaluating talent so untill I see otherwise I'm excited.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers can't afford to have the wheels come off Willie Parker again.

NFL teams rarely devote a first-round draft pick to a position of strength, but that is exactly what the Steelers did by choosing Rashard Mendenhall of Illinois with the No. 23 pick last weekend.

Suddenly, Willie Parker -- the NFL's leading rusher until breaking his right leg on Dec. 20 -- finds himself competing for every carry and every snap. The Steelers didn't draft Mendenhall to sit him, and that means Parker must share a ball that rarely wound up in any other Pittsburgh back's hands last season.

Parker and Mendenhall were on the field together for the first time Friday during the Steelers' mandatory three-day minicamp, and the Steelers' Pro Bowl running back acknowledged it was a bit of an adjustment sharing a position.

ESPN - Parker happily showing Mendenhall the Steelers' way - NFL

PITTSBURGH -- Every time Willie Parker sees Steelers rookie running back Rashard Mendenhall, he cannot help but think of Jerome Bettis.

The thought has nothing to do with Mendenhall's running style. It has to do with the way Bettis -- a future Hall of Famer -- embraced and tutored Parker as a rookie, which eventually led to Pittsburgh winning a Super Bowl their second year together in 2005.

"JB always kept it real with me,'' Parker said glowingly. "He told me as long as I passed the blueprint on to somebody else and not be selfish, that's the only way we can have the running back tradition that we've had here. So, yeah, it's my turn."
