Roethlisberger takes a hit in practice, limps off



Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger went down with a right foot or ankle injury today in the final practice of training camp.

Asked after practice if Roethlisberger would be all right, Coach Mike Tomlin told the Post-Gazette, "Yup."

Several of his teammates concurred, including backup quarterback Charlie Batch, who said he believes Roethlisberger will be OK. However, it's possible he will not play Saturday night in Washington against the Redskins.

Steelers spokesman Dave Lockett, after talking to Tomlin following practice, acknowledged that Roethlisberger's foot was stepped on, but provided no further details on the injury.

Tackle Max Starks fell into him during a pass in team drills 20 minutes before the end of practice.

Trainers attended to Roethlisberger as practice continued.

They eventually wrapped his ankle in ice and he watched the rest of practice sitting on a water cooler with a towel draped over his head.

Twenty minutes after the ice was placed on his right ankle, it was removed by trainer John Norwig. Roethlisberger pulled his right shoe back on and limped to the sideline. There, team president Art Rooney asked him how it was.

Roethlisberger replied, with a slight smile, "Oh, it just feels great. It feels like a car ran over it."

A minute later, someone else asked him how he was. Roethlisberger said, "Oh, I'll be all right."

Roethlisberger finished watching the rest of practice sitting on a Gatorade bucket on the sideline. While there was no immediate word on the extent of his injury, it appeared not to be serious.

If it were, in past such instances with players, Steelers medical staff would place the player on a cart for immediate medical treatment and/or tests.

I thought Mendenhall showed flashes last night. Sweed made a couple nice catches and a customary drive stopping drop. Every time Ziggy gets in the game he makes a play. Burnett is doing everything he can to make sure he doesn't see a meaningful punt during the regular season. Having a healthy Sepulveda will do nothing but help the defense. I think Ratliff wins the 4th corner spot...that was a nice pick. Gotta love Stefan Logan on returns. Reminds me of Darren Sproles. The biggest question mark, once again, is our offensive line. Still hard to believe we won it last year with how ineffective our running game was.

I never like a team's chances to repeat but I'm cautiously optimistic.

I only watched the first quarter when it was 1's vs 1's but the OL did a decent job against a pretty stacked Washington DL imo. They aren't ever going to be the strength of the team but the OC seems to be able to make it all work together given all the skill talent he has.

I agree, and Kemoeatu didn't even play last night. The Redskins are stout up front.

Obviously the line was good enough last year, it just wasn't the type of Steeler offense we've become accustomed to seeing. I read recently that the Steelers' record was 102-1-1 when they had an 11 point lead during the Cowher era. At the end of the day I guess I'll trade a good running game for Super Bowls.

Yeah, I think its just an expectation adjustment for the Steeler faithful as much as anything. They can't line up and play Marty/Cowher ball anymore but maybe thats a good thing.

The 5 wide sets can still control the ball, convert 3rd downs and eat clock. The fat ass OL is good enough at pass blocking and straight run blocking when the box is cleared out.to be effective.

The big change is just that we can't run when the other team knows we are going to run anymore. The OC does a good job with this imo, you almost always see a 4-5 wide look in the red zone.

Also, I think Big Ben's ability to extend plays is what allows them to have the OL they do. I'd love to see more talent along the OL but you have limited resources and they appear to have found the right balance. I always remind people bitching about the OL that it was the offense that won the SB on a last minute drive after the D had spit the bit.

A bit of perspective helps sometimes, I wish I had a better one as far as the Buckeyes are concerned.

Jeff Reed gets down.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed has been cited by city police for public intoxication and disorderly conduct outside a bar a couple of blocks from where the team beat the Cleveland Browns a few hours earlier.

Police say Reed was cited outside McFadden's Bar about 9 p.m. Sunday.

Reed kicked two field goals in the 27-14 victory.
This is Reed's second brush with the law this year.
He paid $543 in fines and restitution after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct and criminal mischief for damaging a paper towel dispenser in a convenience store bathroom in New Alexandria in February.
Team spokesman Dave Lockett says the team is still gathering information and has no comment. Police say Reed will be mailed a summons to appear in city court.

Good but far from great team when Troy is out.

Combine that with Ben doing the Red Zone turn over deal again and it gets 2006ish in a hurry.
