Roethlisberger putting crash behind him
ALAN ROBINSON
Associated Press
PITTSBURGH - Ben Roethlisberger didn't have any problem recalling the significance of June 12. It's been circled on his calendar for nearly a year. So, while the Steelers were holding a voluntary team workout Tuesday at Heinz Field - spending a day away from their practice complex - their quarterback was remembering where he was a year ago to the day.
That day he crashed his motorcycle into the side of a car that failed to yield the right of way at a busy Pittsburgh intersection, causing a scary accident in which the helmet-less Roethlisberger lost considerable blood - and, with it, nearly was killed.
"This is the day last year that, uh, I almost lost my life. ... I had it marked on the calendar," Roethlisberger said as the Steelers wound down their offseason drills. "I marked it down today on the calendar as one year and then tomorrow I had, 'Hopefully, no more talking about it.' "

Big Ben's No. 7 retired
BY MARK SCHMETZER | ENQUIRER CONTRIBUTOR
OXFORD - One of the goals Ben Roethlisberger set for himself as a child growing up in Findlay, Ohio, was to have his high school, college and professional football jersey numbers retired - in his honor, of course.
The former Miami quarterback is two-thirds of the way toward realizing his dream. In pregame ceremonies Saturday at Yager Stadium, his No. 7 became the third to be retired by the school, joining John Pont's 42 and Bob Hitchens' 40.
Pont and Hitchens were on the field with Roethlisberger before the game.

Roethlisberger gets more than $36 million in guarantees in new deal
By Michael Smith
ESPN.com
(Archive)
The Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger have agreed to a new eight-year, $102 million contract.
The contract, which includes more than $36 million in guarantees and is easily the largest in team history, places Big Ben among the game's highest-paid players. In comparison, Peyton Manning received a $34.5 million signing bonus in his big deal and Michael Vick received $37 million in guarantees from the Falcons in his mega deal. Both Manning's and Vick's deals were signed in 2004.
