Well, historically, teams have not improved once Marty has left, below are the winning percentages.
Browns 4 years with Schottenheimer: 40-23 (.634)
Browns 4 years after Schottenheimer: 25-38-1 (.390)
Chiefs 9 years with Schottenheimer: 101-58 (.635)
Chiefs 7 years after Schottenheimer: 60-52 (.535)
Redskins 1 year with Schottenheimer: 8-8 (.500)
Redskins 1 year after Schottenheimer: 7-9 (.437)
Chargers 5 years with Schottenheimer: 47-33 (.587)
Now that all looks great, the problem is that 5-13 record in the play offs, although the Chargers I believe were 7-12 in the playoffs prior to this year, not exactly "stunning" results from either end. AJ Smith and Marty have gotten a great team built in SD, now they just need a coach that can take them to the next level, although, I will be surprised if he's not given one more year in SD. The main reason I say that is that the franchise has never had 14 wins in a season, and this year had so many high notes for the Chargers.
So maybe the Chargers don't need him, but prior to his arrival they hadn't broke the .500 mark since 1995. In the Period since Bobby Ross left and Marty came in they were 23-57.
My point? This franchise has never been a "winner" and unless San Diego gets a big name reliable coach then dropping Marty would be a bad idea. I don't want to see the team go through bad college coaches again, Riley may be a decent college football coach but he sucked in the NFL.
That's my opinion anyways.
